CX and LH Group sign co-operation agreement

Starting April 26, CX and LH/LX/OS will start code-share and FFP earn/redemption on specific routes!

https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...agreement.html

After the partnership with NZ and AC, this makes me really wonder when will CX leave OW and join Star!

This came days after the AA's intention to invest in CZ was made public. Coincidence?

CX has ZERO incentive to leave its pond.

CX competes with SQ and NZ on many routes. I doubt the existing *A members would simply "allow" CX to switch sides. It seems like LH just found a good opportunity to expand their network against ME3 and the move has not been aggressive enough to cause trouble with existing partners. Anything beyond this, e.g. more connections to other European destinations, more intra-Asia flights would be hard to justify...

We will see more of these from all airlines. The alliances are fairly saturated now, not many major airlines left to choose from, so this is the next natural step.

The good news is that club points will be earned if you book on the CX flight number:

Today’s co-operation agreement also extends to both airlines’ frequent flyer programmes. Passengers who are members of Cathay Pacific’s travel and lifestyle rewards programme, Asia Miles and Lufthansa Group’s loyalty programme, Miles and More, will be eligible to earn and redeem miles when travelling on the above codeshare routes. Members of Cathay Pacific’s loyalty programme, Marco Polo Club, can also earn Club Points when travelling on codeshare flights marketed by Cathay Pacific and operated by Lufthansa Group.

So who loses out here - BA? SQ? TG? ME3? With LH/LX offering connectivity via FRA and ZRH, seems like it'd be BA.

Based on the destinations offered, it seems like they've steered clear of places BA cares a great deal about (at least insofar as convincing people to backtrack on their way to Asia).

Lufthansa
Between Frankfurt and:
Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Dresden, Hannover, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Oslo and Stuttgart.

Swiss
Between Zurich and:
Berlin, Brussels, Florence, Geneva, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Venice.

Austrian Airlines
Between Vienna and:
Frankfurt, Zurich and Düsseldorf.

Maybe this will be the beginning of the end of airline alliances?

Perhaps in a few years, there will be no such thing as alliances anymore and each carrier is free to choose whomever they want to codeshare and have frequent flyer program partners with?

Curious about baggage agreements. Would CX's status be honoured if first leg LH, and will through checking be possible?

I don't think Air Berlin flies to Singapore though. They fly to HK from October.

Also CX is probably more desperate to get their ZRH plane filled.
