Many thanks as always, this could be a lucrative source of Reward Cash! (sand save my CCB 5X quota for use elsewhere).

Wonder if Paypal depends on which merchant you use? My iHerb order was priced in HK$, but billed by Paypal out of the US. Also just found another one: (hefty) UK visa fees are billed in HK$ out of the UK.

I think the rough theory is

Overseas merchant billing in HKD: overseas Paypal
HK merchant billing in HKD: can go either way

Question on Citi PremierMiles. Does the $3 / mile on overseas spend kick in only on spend above $20k in a given month, or does all spend in that month earn 1 miles per $3 given that I spend more than $20k?

Examples:
$45k overseas spend = 15k miles

or

$45k overseas spend = 5k + 8.33k miles?

I will have some significant expenditures overseas next month and want to ensure I use the right card.

This is a longshot, but does anyone know of a way to have the credit card companies stop offering the option to settle foreign bills in HKD at rip-off FX rates? I keep getting burned by this by missing the fact that this option is offered on the credit card receipt, not ticking any option as a result, and later finding out that they charged me the HKD amount instead of the local currency amount that would have converted at a more favorable rate even after the 1.95% forex charge (even though I didn't select any option). This has happened to me for both Visa and MC credit cards...

Alternatively, is there a way to make it such that the default option is the local currency option? Or is it completely at the vendor's discretion? If it is the vendor deciding this, just seems frustrating as they presumably don't benefit since they will always receive the same amount in local currency

DBS cuts to card points earning in Singapore

Not directly applicable to us, but DBS operates both here and Singapore, and some of their products in both markets are similar, so we better watch out:

It's called Dynamic Currency Conversion. After suffering it for almost a decade I think it's a device for Visa/Mastercard to increase merchant acceptance by letting merchants scam Visa/Mastercard cardholders.

I also believe it is part of PRC 国策 in order to encourage Unionpay acceptance.

No you can't switch it off by default otherwise the issuer banks will all do so. You can use Unionpay (I do that in the PRC no matter how Quisling it feels) and Amex to get around the problem (using Amex means suffering cherry picking exchange rates tho https://www.hongkongcard.com/forumSE/show/17994)

Master thread here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credi...l#post28417070. Was just writing about how HKMA was sympathetic to DCC compared to US regulators. I wrote some of that thread's wiki http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showwiki.php?t=1815666

Thanks, percy. Comforting to know that I'm not the only one who is annoyed by this practice. I don't get how merchants benefit though - aren't they still only receiving the local amount on the receipt regardless? At least this is what the merchants have been telling me in my past two separate disputes with them.

DCC is the biggest rip off that exists.
Zero consumer benefits.
Sometimes paypal tries to sneak that in, and it is hard to choose the default (pay in default currency).

I found Paypal always have to pay in HKD? For DCC, you can ask the merchant to use local currency instead

For paypal, many times they ask me to pay in the currency of my credit card (DCC).

For a while, i couldn't figure out how to switch it off.. buried away somewhere sneakily IIRC.

Made me boycott them intentionally... if i could avoid paypal, I would.

Can switch off https://forum.hongkongcard.com/forumSE/show/15295

But must be done before starting transaction

Can't, not even in Greyhound Taikoo Shing with majuki's Chase CSP even with me troubleshooting with staff in Cantonese http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credi...l#post23675006

---

Oh big workaround: use paywave/contactless/Apple Pay/Android Pay where available. So far in my experience merchants cannot DCC small ticket transactions

今次合資格本地簽賬好似唔包括保費喎,上階段有冇Ching試過?

The Bank of Communications' promotions always exclude insurance payments, which is despicable. Otherwise one would have easily fulfilled the spending requirement.

Me: Not always - not the March-May 2016 version of this offer https://forum.hongkongcard.com/forumSE/show/17593 . It started in the July-October iteration https://forum.hongkongcard.com/forumSE/show/18787 .
But I missed it, and charged an insurance premium to it. But thanks for pointing it out, I can still make up the spending.

Got hit myself today at Kyoto hotel checkout
Have chip reader - the cashier sticks it in, the machine spits out the card without processing.
Cashier proceeds to swipe, I tried no pin and 000000 pin, rejected with reject slip.
Cashier tries everything twice, same.
I handed over a Flyer World, processed

I called Bankcomm on Skypeout about it, it turns out Bankcomm rejected swipe as Cardholder Verification Method. Probably because the cashier had a chip reader. But I saw for myself the card terminal rejected that.

Dinner: Unionpay wasn't even accepted

One piece of good news when it's difficult to find merchants accepting Unionpay. Just found out today that amazon.com does!
