But I'm existing customer. My original DBS Black Amex was years ago, but I don't remember it taking very long.

Actually it's a bit of wasted effort applying for DBS Black because BEA Flyer World beats it over the head silly for everything. Except overseas spend.

BEA Flyer World - you need to apply for BEA Plat first http://www.hkbea.com/html/en/bea-cre...inum-card.html , get that approved. As soon as you acknowledge the new card, call BEA and apply to upgrade that BEA Plat card to Flyer World immediately.

Plat Visa or Mastercard - I will suggest Plat Visa, which was my upgrade route. Someone upgraded from a JCB. Haven't heard of anyone upgrading from Plat Mastercard.
Except DBS Black is offering $2/mile for the first 2 months. So I will use it for 2 months then apply for the BEA Flyer World.

50 credit-card taking "super taxis" to be introduced mid-Feb

https://hk.news.yahoo.com/%E6%9C%AC%...040800966.html

Translated

50 oversized luggage compartments taxis will be introduced into Hong Kong in the middle of next month. These taxis can not just accomodate more luggage, but allow wheelchair users to board independently, and provide Wifi and USB charging services. These new taxis have the same fare scale as normal taxis, except pre-booking these taxis will result in a $60 booking fee, passengers will be allowed to pay with credit card. Forty of these taxis will be urban taxis and ten of these NT taxis.

---

Wonder how many of these 50 taxis will actually take credit card, unless the $60 booking fee has been paid? Terminals will miraculously malfunction - won't even offer odds on it.

If they refuse to waive the annual fee, can you then cancel the card on the spot and not pay the annual fee?

Yes Amex allows you to do that (even if CBP 25.8 above does not strictly apply to Amex as a non-AI)

OT: Avios changes

FYI changes to Avios taking place.

Haven't had a change to read through everything, but may affect burn esp as compared to AM:

Super useful summary:

Key messages are:

1. No changes to Y(X) partner redemptions on CX/KA

2. No changes to PE(T), J(U) or F(Z) partner redemptions up to Zone 3 (which is the current way you should use Avios on CX anway)

So net off, no adverse changes to us using HK credit card Avios on CX. Keep manufacturing.

Just wondering, since it's already January 29th, is it still worth it to apply for a BEA Visa Platinum card than ask them to upgrade to a BEA World Master after? Or should I give it ~8 more business days and just apply directly for the card?

I don't know if Flyer World will be made available for direct application post-9 Feb. Have they said it will be?

I just gave a call to BEA's hotline, their staff said that they still haven't received any notice that this card is out for public use. Seems like it's still a good idea to register for their other cards and register for an upgrade if this is the case!

Maybe a very obvious question but I would appreciate some opinions: surely the CX Amex is not worth it except the first 3 months with the spending bonus. But even then, with 5$ local and 3$ abroad, for local I'm far better off at supermarkets with Citi rewards (3$) and dining on my 6x HSBC (2.78$), which locally leaves misc spending for consideration. Card to beat is Dah Sing Avios @6$ which I value higher than AM, so barely worth it either. So I would really only use it for foreign spending and the card to beat is 4$ with Citi PM, which offers flexible points currency, which I also value considerably higher than AM.

Bonus for abroad spending in first 3 months maxes out @90k spending if I'm not mistaken, which might be worth it just to stock up on some AM. Mostly I'd get the card for lounge access. I have quite some travel coming up through May, so I'm considering to get it. I'm pretty sure it would catch dust after 3 months though and then would have to bother with AF since there's no point putting 150k a year on it and I understand they don't waive AF if you get nowhere near it (which they haven't either when I held the card a few years back and then cut it).

Would you do it anyways? Any considerations I am overlooking?

svellmann: That's why I let too much dust accumulate on the CX Amex last year, using it only for Arrivals Lounge.

Does it guarantee Arrivals Access when flying CX irrespective of travel class and status? What about flying other airlines?

Any boarding pass from any airline on any class departing HKG or arriving HKG on the day of entry (or the early morning next day - I'm not sure if the 6AM rule applies but should be the same broadly speaking).

So I suppose you came across annual fee issues as well. How did or will you tackle that?
