747 Upper deck seats 81A/K

Best seats for window and privacy.......

Do seats 81 A/K have a good or poor window view?
I heard that there is better privacy in these seats as it is away from the non-crew lavs with no passers by. Is this true?

None of the new J seats have a decent window view, seats are herringbone design

All the new J seats are equally bad, except in that the upper deck ones are slightly less cramped. You're stuck in your own little cubcle wherever you sit.

Any issues with the upper deck getting hot? Seems to be a problem on UA 747s, at least in the back 1/2 of the upper deck.

People have mentioned as such on this forum, but personally I just ask the FAs to make the AC cooler. That always seems to do the trick. Frequently have the same problem (too hot) in the downstairs cabin as well on both 74A and 77A, and just asking the FAs to make it cooler always works.

I flew J HKG-AMS and the crew told me if I really wanted to stay in this seat. I asked them why? App the FA need to check up on the flightdeck every 30min (not sure if it was only required during this midnite departure). So it is not less passers by. However your head is awt window side and I didn't notice a lot of the FA walking by all the time. Flying next month again and (funny enough) just secured the mention seats:D

I think 81A is the best seat on the upper deck. You really have to strain to look out a window, but that's the case with all the seats. There is a little area in front of the seat where you can toss magazines, newspapers or what not, helping to reduce clutter in your own space. And the best thing is that you are served first, which is very nice since service can be slow if the cabin is full due to CX's previous reduction of one FA.

I don't find the FAs walking past to provide service to those in the flight deck bothersome in the least. I'm guessing that people sitting further back in the cabin may get their foot bumped somewhat frequently when people head to the lavs.

Better than 81K for any reason?

Anyway, to reply to the OP, I find 81A and 81K the best because they are the most private, situated as they are at the front of the section and with the least traffic passing by. While I personally like the seats and herringbone arrangement very much, that arrangement can seem a bit like a series of pigeon holes. Sitting at the front of the row decreases that effect.

Having said akk that, the advantage over the other upper deck seats (except for those at the rear of the cabin, which can get some galley noise) is relatively slight, since they're all basically self-contained, quite private pods.

By the way, I hadn't noticed what a previous poster mentioned about the FA coming by every 30 minutes.

The FA told me this before departure, but as I said I didn't notice it all as your head is at the window site. Or was it the Champagne?!?!

81K is not the first seat on the right hand side of the upper deck. 80K is the first seat, but it is held back on long hauls as a pilot rest seat or for other special needs. As a result, the extra space that 81A has in front where you can toss things is not there on 81K, but on 80K.

For short haul, 80K is usually available. I was under the impession that it had no window at all, unlike 81A/K.
Is that the case ???

Another word of advice. If you couldn't get 81A/K, try to be seated as front as possible anyway. Chances are, if you're not DM, that a) your preferred meal choice may already be gone and b) the dish would have been really cold when it comes to you.

I am so glad Cathay prefers cool temp than hot temp. When I was flying China Eastern it was nice and comfy until I start hearing people around me complaining to the FA it's too cold, and then next thing I know the room is steaming.

Sorry, I love AC.

I see. Thanks!

Hi all

I flew HKG-BKK a few days ago in 81A.

I can confirm:

80K has no window.

81A and 81K, because they are the very first rows, only have a single window and are quite dark.

I moved from 81A to 82A so that at least I had my window plus the window of the seat in front (at least until they shut it... ) toi give some light.

Yes there was the little shelf in front of 81A, but I didn't see the need to put anythiing there.

Because the upper deck seats are so much bigger there was heaps of room to store magasines, amenity kit, water bottle beside the bed.

If you are in 81A or K looking out the window is almost impossible.

You can look out the window in 82A (etc) as you get to see out of the window used by 81.

During flight the upper deck windows are particularly conducive to sightseeing! I had the bed made up and was lying on my stomach looking out the window which is at just the right height and to do this! Great views!

Finally - in relation to this thread and others on the CX J herringbone - its not that bad!! I am very tall and find it one of the most comfortable biz class seats. Far more comfortable than BA, QF, TG and so on (haven't tried the new Swiss ones yet).

As for peace anndf quiet - I would think any seat in the first few rows would be just fine.

Once you got into the second cabin upstairs you might get some galley and WC noise and passing traffic from pax in the first few rows - but otherwise I grab any seat 81-85 or so.

Regards
