StudioCX

Hi all,

I am flying CX next month and was looking at the entertainment. While they advertise 100's of movies in their new system, on the website entertainment section there are far less.

I am already sure that my flight will be on one of the new aircraft.

Are they only showing a handful of movies, or will there be more when I get on the plane?

sxc Jun 8, 2009 3:15 am

There will be more on the plane if you get the new system. I don't know whether it is in the 100's but there is more than you could want for.

From CX website http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...ainment/movies

On long-haul aircraft, *up to 100 movies are offered each month on the AVOD (Audio/Video On Demand) system in all classes.

* Number of movies available inflight is route and aircraft specific.

Cathay Boy Jun 8, 2009 9:11 am

I fly long haul between JFK-HKG-JFK and there is definitely not over 100 movies in the IFE. However, the number is very high. Around 40-50. You get a wide selection: recent movies, by category (drama, etc.), and classics.

Perhaps by "movies" they also add TV series and shows? Then it would definitely be over 100.

Speaking of movies, don't they change it on a monthly basis anymore? I always purposely arrange my schedule so it goes from one month to the other so I get different set of movies and TV shows (I can't sleep so I usually watch them all during the long journey), but last time I flew from April (to) and May (back) I noticed the IFE is exactly the same.

mkjr Jun 8, 2009 9:19 am

more than i could watch in the 15 hour flight....

watched 6 full movies on my flight...

I doubt it. That 100 number should be movie alone. Apparently they have up to 350 tv programs LOL

http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...ent/television

Up to *350 TV programmes of short features are shown on the AVOD (Audio/Video On Demand) system each month in all classes.

The 100 movies are only available in J and F....in Y it is a lower number. TV shows are counted separately..around 300...and then music is around 888.

The entertainment is changed every month how ever there can be a few days overlap depending on when a plane transitions HKG and the timing to swap the media.

Really? I thought the Y and J choice was exactly the same on the new aircraft.

Me too, I've flown both J & Y on the new Olympus product and the IFE looked identical to me. I think that all 3 classes have the same IFE now on the Olympus product (though someone who has flown Olympus F can correct me if I am wrong).

Are you sure about this?

Thank you kindly for all the replies.

I've been looking around on the website a bit, and discovered that IFE is the same in all classes, just on different sized screens of course.

It also says up to 100 movies on long-haul.

I suppose this will be the case on their flagship 777s and 747s (which I will be travelling on) and perhaps less on their Airbuses (which i will also be travelling on)

I think I had the new system on an A330 in May. My thinking it was the new system is the moving map was very exciting with 3D views ( :o I was doing quite a bit of flying so a new moving map added a bit of novelty and interest). The 747s and A340 with new product I flew on had the traditional moving map.

So you might get the new system on the Airbus and may not on the 747 if my basic interpretation of the systems by their maps is correct.

chanp Jun 9, 2009 8:37 am

As most pointed out, there are plenty. Way more than I could watch. I think you will enjoy their system as I did.

One thing I find annoying with the new flight map is that at take off and landing, the map reverts to a satellite style view of the ground so you can see exactly where the plane is at that moment....but they overlay it with the stupid text saying how fast the plane is travelling so you can't see the map.

sealalula Jun 9, 2009 7:17 pm

I flew SIN-HKG on a Old Regional Airbus A330-300 that day
via
HKG
HKG-YVR on a Boeing 777-300ER (New entertaiment)

I realised that those entertaiment you see inside CX website is avaible on ALL planes but on those New plane (e.g. 777-300ER) they have extra entertaiment in flight.
LIke the music, not only the have radio channel but they also have about 888CD's to let you choose from.
Games too while the old cabin dont have them

You can watch CX entertaiment that i recorded at www.youtube.com/sealalula

My gripe with what is an otherwise excellent system is the 10 minutes of garbage/in-house advertising you have to endure after take-off. It's one thing on a 12 hour flight but on the way back from Manila it can take up a serious amount of the available time to watch or listen to anything.

Is the map you are referring to = to the 777-300ER map ??

kchika Jun 10, 2009 6:54 pm

The only aircraft I've not yet been on is the 77A and can confirm that on the three other aircraft with new seats (74A, 34B and 33B) only the 33B has new the 3D route maps.

Ok so this means only 77A and 33B have the new 3D moving map. I never knew that!
Just for those who are curious, the new airshow system is called "Rockwell Collins 4200D".

midlevels Jun 10, 2009 8:45 pm

Am I the only one who doesn't like the new airshow much? It has really neat graphics and all but it doesn't do a very good job of telling you where you are relative to the world map, which is the whole point.

The older system, while "boring" was at least more clear.

Oh so the 74A and 34B has the old normal Map???

The 77A and 33B is the new 3D map

Is that right?

b-hqb Jun 10, 2009 10:53 pm

I am theorising that factory-installed cabins come with the new airshow? That being said, someone needs to have floown on HLP-HLS, LAC and LAD (retrofitted) as well as LAE-LAI (factory-installed) to confirm this.

CX has the best IFE on the market currently, IMHO. Compare that to the rubbish that for example LH is offering...

yiu Jun 10, 2009 11:36 pm

On the 77A flights I took, it didn't show the altitude/speed/tail wind or head win, which used to be on the old system. Also, the daily news channel never work! Or was that just me?

I went on the A330 LAI (factory-installed), and that had the 3D airshow.
The A340 I'm guessing was retrofitted, and that had the old airshow.

I was on 77A too, however i saw the altitute/speed/temperature but no head wind or tail wind either.

Worst of all, my entertaiment crashed for about an Hour !!!!
And finally , the FA reset it for me

on the first 77A flight i took (on kpb in Aug 2008), there was no altitude, speed, tail wind, etc etc.

however on recent flights (dec, jan, april 2009), there was altitude and speed but no tail/head wind.

i remember trying out the news on the first flight and it didn't work as well. don't know about now...

You are not the only one. I agree. The graphics are great but the info is lacking.

I would have thought the FA would reset it straight away.

I was on an Emirates flight when my system crashed. I waited a while to see if it would automatically reset but it didn't so while the FA's were serving the meals I asked, and he actually stopped the cart, went and made a call and it reset itself over about five minutes.

It seems that the new hi-tech entertainment system is a tad buggy, hopefully I don't have this problem.
