Network and USB jack??
Noticed on my last few flights that there are now network and USB jacks in J in the flat bed configuration.
Any idea what they're for? In flight internet?? |

Are these USB connectors available in Economy class? If not, can I plug in my iPhone USB Power plug onto the Empower socket with no adapters required?
I would like to use it for charging and using my iPhone on a long distance flight. |
In some of the aircraft (I think the A330s) the network jack is covered up. So maybe they made a provision for internet, but haven't decided whether to turn it on. I'm not holding my breath that they will ever be active.

The USB is for charging only at the moment.. who knows if they will do something like SQ and put in some sort of productivity suite in the IFE...
no idea what the ethernet is for.. probably going to be useless since internet onboard in the future will most likely be using wifi... |

Cool, i wanted to post that question too but since you already post it then i shall just add-on.

I will be traveling on CX888 on a different date, but the same model which has AC power as well. On the CX 839 flight, you will need an empower adapter in order to get power since the aircraft (A340) is older. CX711 will again be a 74A which will have AC power Why I asked my question was in the FAQ stated that the new aircraft 74A, 777-300ER have in-seat charging power problems and the Cathay engineers are working hard to fix the problem. Since this was updated 3 months ago, I'm wondering if they have fixed this issue. I also wonder if CX would ever implement a USB port for synchronization/charging of an iPod with their system? Like SQ |

I'm not so sure about your CX734 flight when you state it as Airbus A330 when I check the CX website saying that flight will be flown by a 74A (747-400) which has AC power with no adapter required.

Anyone have their butt in Y to confirm it ? (May be I will try to ask FA on my CTS flight also .. I fly in J this time so don't know about Y) |
can someone please tell me if CX881 has working usb for charging in Economy Class? Thank you!!
|
There's something wrong, apparently the AC power can only be used to power the laptop, not charge it. This means you have to remove the battery. Same with the other devices. I tried it with my iPhone and it doesn't charge. It would be great if CX can change that.
|
I cannot think of any possible intelligent device that CX could have installed that knows for what purpose electricity is being drawn from a socket. Does anyone else have this experience?
|
On SFO-HKG my iPhone charged on board in flight... did you check to see if the green light was on?
Also, the USB/Ethernet is covered up on the 74As. |

Today, CX252 was supposed to have working power in Y but at least in my seat (and on next seat as well) the light didn't come up. In CX777 (B777 with New Economy) however power in Y was working. I used it to charge my iPhone, which really needed it after so many connections.
|
Is there a list somewhere of which aircraft have working power in Y? Is it purely pot luck or do all the "Olympus" aircraft now have working power?
|
And report from my return trip, in Economy class.
CX776 and CX251 - no working power. I think the common factor was Boeing 747, CX777 on my way to Jakarta was operated with Boeing 777 and there I had working power. All flights were with the New Economy. |
From the sounds of it, the power in Y works on everything but the B747. Does this mean that the newly converted 34B's will have working power in Y as well?
|
To my understanding, all new Y seats have working power point except those on 74A. The reason is some issue with HKCAD when CX install the new Y seats on 74A. If my memory is correct a few 74A do have working power point in Y class for testing.(I only can remember one of them is B-HKT or HOT?)
|
The issue with battery in versus out is one of amperage drawn by the laptop. On some aircraft that I have flown with my Sony VAIO I can use my laptop with the battery but after some number of minutes the power is disabled due to the amperage being drawn. Removing the battery solves the problem.

Just looked up the schedules and its a 34B LHR-HKG, EQV HKG-AKL, 34B AKL-HKG and then 74A HKG-LHR. Fingers crossed that the EQV turns out to be a 34B instead of a 34C or D.
