Extra baggage allowance problem when switching airline

The misses and I will do our first trip over to Europe on CX in about 2 weeks. We are flying PVG-HKG-FRA with CX, but to be able to arrive at our final destination in Sweden, we have to fly with Lufthansa between FRA-GOT.

So we have a little bit of a problem when it comes to the extra baggage allowance. We are both Silver members, so that (as we all know) allows us +10kg. But since neither of us has any status with LF, we are according to the LF rules, not allowed any extra weight on their flight.

We are both Gold with KLM/AF, but since their prices out from both AMS and PAR, I'm refusing to fly the last part with them. It's almost 200EURO cheaper to fly with LF...

The problem here is of course that we have to fly with LF to get to our final destination, since CX is not offering this rout.

So is there anybody else out there who's been in this situation? I'm guessing that there is absolutely nothing we can do about it, but then again if there is (magically), please don't hesitate to let me know :)

Cheers,
Joe

They can`t be any worse than BA who is not respecting CX baggage allowances on the CX codeshares to LHR. It takes a lot of effort to avoid paying for excess baggage while within CX DM/GO/SL limits.

You mean LH (Lufthansa)?
You will have 20 kg per person in europe. If CX can check your luggage thru to the final destination (they should but not sure if they are willing to) then yoiu are safe.
If you need to pick up and recheck you should have no more than 22 kg check in luggage per person - otherwise it gets expensive quick. You can find the fees on the lufthansa website.

Also there's the problem of returning with all that luggage as LH is the first airline too.

Yeah, I knew this already since I've flown with LH a few times before. CX will not check our luggage all the way from PVG to GOT.

I'm almost 100% sure that we can't do anything about this. The +10 with CX will be worth nothing on this specific trip. Well well... :)

Cheers,
Joe

well, to be fair, if I remember right in the MPO benefits table it does say that all benefits apply to flights operated and marketed by CX/KA only (except the oneworld benefits - but excess baggage isn't one of them I think) ?

Yes, but it sort of negates the excess baggage benefit to us MPC tier members flying ex-Europe via LHR. This has never been a problem before last year but now BA seems intent to cash in on codeshare partners and their passengers.

Your best bet is to perhaps get a status match to a *A programme using your AF/KL Gold status. Go to the BD forum, and you can see that BD will status match your Gold Status to their Gold Status.

Once you are BD Gold which is Star Alliance Gold, you will be able to take an extra 20kg luggage on all Star Alliance flights which will include the LH flight.

But it will depend on how fast BD will status match you. You might be able to send them a fax etc. Go to BD forum for instructions on what to do.

Alternatively, you might want to get an award ticket on AY or BA from FRA to GOT. Then you'd get 30kg per person.

since when does BA not repsect CX code share, I have never had a problem when mixing and matching flights with these airlines I fly TPE HKG LHR MAN almost every 4-5 weeks in biz class and always get told I can have 3 pc of 23kg plus my CX card extra allowance on all the flights. I use CX to between HKG and TPE and BA for the rest

Unfortunately it seems BA has completely stopped co-operating with OW partners regarding baggage allowance at least on ex-Germany codeshare flights. It can be quite an annoyance.

Maybe BA is not happy with the revenue they are getting and wants to force CX passengers on the Continent to choose other longhaul airports instead of LHR.

I've had similar problems. I frequently travel Australia-HKG-SVO on CX/SU codeshare. AS a DM, my luggage allowance is 40kg. When flights originate in Australia, no dramas checking that much luggage all the way through to Moscow (though I have to get boarding passes in HK). Same when checking in CX/SU operated flights in HK, though I have been stung once (they do give a 50% discount if you pay the excess luggage charge by cash though).

However, when returning on the CX codeshare flight (operated by SU), the Moscow SU check-in Dragons are quite strict with the weight. Any kg over the 20kg allowance is charged. DM privileges don't apply - I've even rung HK to confirm.

I think this is disgraceful - esp since I purchased the ticket through CX, on a CX flight nr, CX rules should apply.

If BA does make you pay, make sure they only charge you the per-bag charge they charge to BA passengers, and not a per-KG charge.

Thanks. Fortunately have been able to avoid extra charges so far. It's somewhat bizarre as Club Miles and Sectors are added for the BA codeshare feeder flights so one would think MPC benefits also apply.
