Are the gates on 4F all shuttle gates (511-513 and 521-524) or is just the ones out to the North Satellite?

The North Satellite Concourse is accessed via a shuttle that leaves every few minutes (bus).

The gates on 4F (511-513, 521-524) are used to access the planes parked away from the gates, via bus directly to the plane. So, yes, they are shuttle gates.

I hope they plan to build a tunnel between the satellite gates and the main terminal.

I wonder why they did not do that too.

Because the north satellite terminal is never on the master plan (the master plan does not talk about Check-in only T2 as well)

The master plan only planned the mid-field terminal which the current auto train is planned to go there. And, afterall, digging a tunnle under the busy taxi-way sounds prohibitive for me.

IIRC, when they built the satiellite terminal, some of the gates (15-17?) were closed. They should be able to dig a tunnel back then.

The only time I've deplaned at a remote gate at HKIA, it was actually the center of the runway.

August of '06 (the day after the explosive liquid scare) we landed from LAX with a gimpy forward landing gear. They held us on the plane and went back and forth as to how they were going to get us to the gate and off the plane. After about an hour, the Captain came on the intercom and told us they had relented and were sending buses to the runway. He told us to get off the plane before the airport changed it's mind again.

As we descended the stairs and walked to the buses, there were guys jacking up the front end of the 747.

Best deplaning experience EVER. Just after sunrise, walking on the runway at HKIA. ENORMOUS plane being jacked up behind us.

Ahh, that makes sense then. What I also don't really understand is how the transfer areas work. I thought you would just take an escalator up to the arrivals level, but that doesnt seem to be the case. Does anyone know how these work?

Flew HKG-CAN on KA at gate 505 last month. At first I had no idea about 5xx gate, and only later I found out that it is definitely at NSC. NSC was actually better than I thought given I thought it was some shed far away from main T1 ...... anyway now they need to build some tunnels to connect these satellite concourses ....
