HKG Connection Time

I'm flying YYZ-HKG-BKK. Is it realistic to make the connection in 60 minutes? Would my bags make it? We'd be coming off a 777. Would I be better off waiting for the next flight, which is 3.5 hours later?

That is tight for HKG. I don't know what everyone else's experience is but the only time CX lost my bags was when I had a <1.5hr connection (though inbound was 30min late). I was told insufficient connect time was the reason. Remember that while you won't have to change terminals, you will have to clear security and might have bit of a walk.

i do think that is enough time for a transfer, but i dont know if ur bags are going to make it seeing i never made a HKG transfer (based here)

I had a 65 minute transfer just yesterday and it was enough time for me to clear security and go into The Pier for a bowl of warm noodles. However, I was nervous the entire flight into HKG because any slight delays or if my gates were located far away would stretch my connection time. Fortunately for me, my flight arrived on time and my arrival gate was gate 65 and my connecting flight was nearby at gate 61. Also, I was one of the first to deplane thus I was at the front of the security line. Unfortunately for me however, my luggage wasn't able to make my connecting flight even with the business class priority tags. The odd thing was that the luggage of my officemate who took the same flight as I did saw his luggage make the connecting flight even though he didn't have the priority luggage tags.

Personally, I won't be doing an itinerary again with such a tight connection time just for my peace of mind.

Yes...if you arrive exactly on time you (and your bags) should make it, as far as efficiency and ease is concerned you cannot beat HKIA. HOWEVER, come on here you'll be crossing your fingers the whole flight...if your flight is as much as 15 or 20 minutes late you're already cutting it way too close and your bags very likely won't make it. Take the later flight unless you have to make a meeting, best friend's wedding, etc.

Thanks for the help!

I'll keep the connection at 3:25, especially since I'll be transiting BKK to HKT. If I make the flight, but my bags don't, I don't see the point in forcing a tight connection.

On a side note, does anyone have experience on YYZ-HKG in J? I love CX, but don't get to fly it often. I imagine the food/service is impeccable.

Well OK, but if your bags come 2 hours later then CX will deliver them to your hotel in BKK (MCT CX-CX at HKG is 45 mins so if your bags don't make it they will deliver at their expense). No big deal as far as I am concerned. Agreed it is slightly different if you are connecting to the last flight of the day to BKK so ypu would have to overnight without luggage.

That's exactly what I'm looking to do--catch a 10:30 pm Thai BKK-HKT flight.
The downside of waiting for luggage the next day in Phuket isn;t worth the risk, IMO. I'll take the longer layover in HKG to ensure I travel with my bags.

Thanks.

OIC - sorry - didn't realise you had an onward connection in BKK. Just out of curiosity, if you're arriving on the CX827 at 12:55 are you not on a good day to take HKG-HKT direct CX6802?

I am traveling next December--CX has the flight arriving at 3 pm. I'm booked on the 6:25 pm flight, but the 4 pm 747 is open. I'll misconnect the Dragonair flights to HKT, so this is the next best option.

By the way, I'm traveling on an AA award, and I've been told award space on the HKG-HKT run is nearly impossible to find.
