Bringing Dry Ice on the plane?

According to the HK airport website, you are allowed to bring 2lbs of dry ice in hand luggage. Does anyone have experience traveling with more? We are worried that it will melt before we reach our destination.

How much more?

As long as it's not a ridiculous amount, I am sure it'll be fine.

Rest assured, this is not the TSA.

Dry ice doesn't melt. It just vaporizes.

It will also depend on what you're carrying that requires dry ice packaging.

The solution is to use a properly insulated bag, designed for long term cold storage, and not more dry ice. 2 lbs is enough to last 24 hours with the correct bag (however such bags are not cheap as they use space-age insulation!).

All airports restrict dry ice in carry-on, and while HKG is not the TSA, the limit is very strictly enforced as dry ice is a potent weapon. Just be glad that it is allowed at all. If you are traveling in F on CX or BA, most crews will put your stuff into their on-board refrigerator if you ask nicely (they are tight on space but can manage to shuffle things around for a reasonable amount of space).

I've once transported some ice-cream from HKG-PEK packed with dry ice... probably around half a pound of it, and it lasted more than the 7ish hours total travelling time door to doo! Just pack it in a properly insulated bag, and I'm sure 2 pounds would be enough to carry something even on longhaul routes! :)

tried this for the first time to bring frozen foods.

Ok United allows up 5.5 lbs checked or carry on but they charge $200 for international passengers who check it in, I thought there would be a waiver since i am flying business class and 1k member but i found out there is not, I will try to call the 1k desk and see if they will waive but who knows. It is not clear if they charge that fee if you carryon but i am going to try that next time.

It sublimates actually.

I've just brought a cake from HKG to LHR (cake was from Patisserie Tony Wong if anyone is wondering). The FAs did not allow me to store the cake in their fridges due to the possibility of cross contamination, but they were kind enough to put dry ice in the bag and store it in the galley.

Bringing up a 6 year old thread is one thing. But to fill it with mindless chatter (especially the UA part) is another.

Closed.
