CX has a number of fares book into lower subclass code than the first letter of fare basis. I've even seen Y fare basis books into H. It is the booking code that counts. In the above example, it will be credited as H. :(

These sites offer special disounted fares. If you just book it under CX website or aa.com, you'd get the actual fare basis and booking class.

This was great information and really appreciated (and very educational). I worked on this with my travel agent today, and while we saw the BHAP12M LAX-HKG, whenever we tried to force the same code for LAX-BKK it automatically switched over to BLE4M. Price difference was about $800 for LAX-BKK. The last few posts really prepared me for this and prevented me from changing to a fare that would have been useless for my status goal. I think I will be looking for a quick mileage run instead (i.e. one day LAX-STL for $198).

YBHKLMV are the sub-classes in economy on CX which earn AsiaMiles/MarcoPolo Club Sectors/Miles.

Several months ago we booked S fare on HKG-BKK-HKG flights but now it could make all sense to fly at least one segment in Y or H or B to qualify for current 1W promo (12,000 miles for 2 1W segments= we need just 1 segment on Cx as we will have 1 segment on BA later).
Could you please advise where and how to upgrage (fare or class ;) ) in the most economical way?

You cannot change one sector's booking code. Usually when an 's' booking code is concerned, it's a special fare that earns no miles. So that means, they cannot combine it with any sector that is a published fare.
