Overnighting at HKG, the Wing
I'm arriving late on a Saturday and leaving early on a Sunday.
The Wing seems to be open from 4:30 am until the last flight out. So, do they keep the Wing open until the Aeroflot codeshare at 1:15 am? Will the Cabanas be available for the whole time, or are there time limits? Sorry if this has been discussed before; the Google search isn't being very helpful. |
The hours vary seasonally and with flight schedules, also Wing is kept open for delayed flights. About midnight is when the upstairs closes for cleaning, leaving only the downstairs part open in the wee hours. All the nice stuff is upstairs, so it is effectively closed. Similarly only the downstairs opens at 4:30, the upstairs opens about 6. The downstairs is kept open until the last CX coded flight departs (with the possible exception of the night freight flights to BKK/SIN which take passengers). You can't stay overnight in the Wing, it will be closed for at least an hour, but I suppose there is lots of jogging space in the terminal.
To answer your specific question about the Cabanas, those have shorter hours than the lounge. Closes before midnight (maybe 11 for last access to them) and open after 6 (maybe 7 am). Not sure of the times but I remember having to wait for the Cabanas to be opened after the F lounge was open. |
Did this recently and it wasn't so bad. We took showers and hung out in the F lounge until midnight, then went and wandered around/sat in chairs in the main airport area until 4:30, at which time we went back to the Wing. Only problem is, when we got there, there was no one around and the gate was 3/4 of the way down. Finally at around 5:00 staff started showing up, and around 5:15 they let us into the downstairs area. At around 5:45 or 6:00 they let us upstairs and the cabanas were ready pretty much immediately, though the guy there warned us that there might not be hot water for a while, so we should run the tap. Sure enough, it took a good 15 minutes for the water to become hot. Not sure if my experience is typical, but thought it might be of use to you....

Since your flight leaves on Sunday morning, I don't think you have access privileges to the Wing/Pier the night before your departure flight. I believe that oneworld F/J/emerald/sapphire passengers are given Wing/Pier access on the day of departure.
This may be an option for you since you are a transit passenger: http://www.plaza-ppl.com/hk_en/main.php |

please see this regarding the wing. what this means is you may need to sleep on the bench for about 4 hours, between 1230-430. if you are lucky you may stay for a (QUITE) bit longer at the level 6 section (the previous elemis spa nrighborhood) if there are cargo/DHL flights that night. ask the lounge agent about that schedule when you arrive (there used to be even 3am or 4am cargo flights). the cabana won't be accessible until 6-7am. on the other hand, i suppose you can still access the wi-fi from the benches outside the wing and it should be easy to kill your 4 hours. the alternative is to head out to LKF/Wanchai after leaving your hand-carry and taking a shower at the Wing. |
Or a local TA can sometimes (depending on the time of year) get you a 100USD ish room at the airport hotel..

Thanks for all the replies. But whoa, I didn't even consider the possibility of not having access to the Wing as a transit passenger with a CX boarding pass in hand and the flight leaving in less than 12 hours! Can anyone confirm this?
The Regal Airport Hotel is quoting HK$2100 for the night on their web site. It seems a tad much for just a night at the airport. Anyone have experience of the Plaza Premium Lounge francophile mentioned? HK$250 doesn't seem all that bad. |
Technically security is not supposed to let you in to the departures level if you have a boarding pass for the next day! So you may not even be able to reach the Wing. Often security is lax about checking but as for getting into the Wing, if you flew to HKG on CX or other OW airline then they will let you in; otherwise if you used a competing alliance and are counting on your next day connection, they won't let you in until the date of your OW flight.

yes, number_6 is right.
you are only allowed to go to the departure level with same day BP. he is probably also right that some times the security staff are not very observant and will just let you go throuhg without looking at the date of departure. i suspect the issue is more about getting between the two separate levels (arrival and departure) than lounge rule, i also suspect the lounge rule is written based on what they know about airport transit system.. having said that, if you explain to CX staff you have no place to go and are on a jet-lag, they might bend the rule and let you in. |

If you have 12 hours in HKG I would leave the airport and visit Kowloon. Lots of shops open even at midnight (many open till 2am and people are milling about). Also lots of small hotels to choose from in Kowloon, should be easy to find a room for HKD 500 or USD 60. Not luxurious but adequate, some are even clean and not so noisy. It takes less than an hour to get to/from the airport, so you have at least 8 hours of visiting time which makes leaving the airport worthwhile. Unless you've been to HKG so often that you are sick of it (hard to believe, it is a great city for the tourist).

If you're interested PM me for the address of a decent local TA who has good rates for the airport hotel (way less than the website), or as suggested head downtown - lots of choices...

Regal Airport Hotel rates
Just booked myself a room for early May at the Regal Airport Hotel at around 1250 HK$ on http://www.precisionreservations.com. First time I book via this site, hope it works out well (btw, their rates for other hotels look promising too). Sounds like a decent overnight deal, arriving late from CEBU and leaving the next morning to TPE.
Rate is way lower than Regal's own Internet rate of 2100 HK$ as published elsewhere on this thread. |

Last AE train departs 12:48am; even if it's midnight, a 11pm arrival can still make it usually.
Last "A" buses do leave at midnight, but there are "N" buses that run overnight. |
| All times are GMT -6. The time now is 1:29 pm. |
