Upgrading with miles

I am booked on AA6091 and CX709 (JFK-HKG-BKK) Apr 17 in Y. My understanding is that I need 35K Asia Miles to upgrade this itin one-way from Y to J. Is this correct? Since part of the res is booked as AA, can I upgrade using AA or BA miles? As an OW Emerald I assume that the u/g can be confirmed at ticketing. Both flights show J9 C9 D9.

Can't seem to find this info on the CX website. Also, I cant use the search function so I apologize if these questions have been answered before. Thanks. I look forward to CX J. I hear good things :D

That would be fine as long as I could then use AA or BA miles to u/g the CX operated (AA flight number) segment.

you cannot use aa miles to upgrade codeshare flights

Thats what I thought. So then does anyone know if CX operated (AA numbered) flights can be upgraded at all? and if so how? Thanks.

Codeshare flights do not have upgrade inventory!

You need to book under the flight number of the operating carrier to upgrade.

With Asia Miles, you can upgrade flights on AA, BA, CX (provided that you book under the original flight number).

With AAdvantage, the only airline you can upgrade on is AA metal flights.

points.com will let you move miles between AA and Asiamiles, I believe, but you lose a lot in the process. If you are really desparate, you could look at them.

I've never done it--I was in the same situation earlier this morning on the phone with AA asking about codeshares and the operator recommended I look at points.com.

Gotta love OW  although I suppose it might be the same elsewhere. What is the logic behind such strict rules for upgrading. If I am booked on an AA codeshare (CX metal) I can't understand why CX would not want me to use AsiaMiles to upgrade. I know CX and BA have great J/F service but they keep a TIGHT grasp on those seats. I'm paying full fare Y so its not like I would be using miles to upgrade an cheapo ticket.

If you're booked in full Y, then shouldn't it be (relatively) simple to get rebooked on the CX flight number instead? Then you'd be able to go for the AsiaMiles upgrade.

FewMiles..

For some reason the CX flight number is more than 1k more expensive than the codeshare. Maybe that's because I'm booked on JL/AA on the return and the pure CX flight requires a roundtrip....not sure. Anyway, at this point I'm just hoping that Y is overbooked and that I get an op-up.....crossing my fingers. Otherwise its going to be a long flight in 30E. I cant even get a good exit row seat from AA and CX claims to not be able to change my seat res because I'm booked on a codeshare.
