Typhoon @ HKG?

I am flying from HKG to LAX on CX880 on Friday night the 27th. I understand there is a typhoon that will ne near HKG that day, but it doesn't sound like it will be very severe. Do folks think the typhoon will impact flight 880?

Typhoons are like hurricanes. So there is really no way to predict if the Typhoon warning will go higher than 8. I thnk planes can still TAKE OFF from HKG at typhoon warning 6 or 7.

I was on a flight once from YVR where the prediction was that the typhoon will pass or be washed out. But about two hours out of HKG, I noticed the plane slowly changing course and descending. Soon we were advised that due to Typhoon, the flight would land in TPE instead. CX took care of all transfers, and arrangements and we flew off for HKG the next day.

So really, no one knows. Not even weather predictions.

In HK, there is no such thing as a typhoon warning 6 or 7. It goes from 1 to 3 to 8. Learn all about it at www.weather.gov.hk

Current predictions are that, if it continues its present path, it should be a tropical depression by tomorrow evening. However, if it shifts towards the coast, it could intensify, and hit HKG head on, but this is not currently likely. I hope so, because I'm flying into HKG tomorrow evening...

Sorry.. I thought it goes up to 10! That's at least what my relatives in HK tell me all the time. That it's a 10.

It does, but only after its been an 8 and then a 9. A 10 is a head on hit of a world-class typhoon. HKG only gets one of those every few years.

Yep. typhoon should be closest to Hong Kong on Friday morning--and long gone by the time you guys fly out of CLK on Friday night.

It's already dissipated.

Yup - actually by Fri night the weather (and especially the Central light show) was quite nice. Wish it had been as nice the past two days. Flight left on time, actually landed a few minutes early. Thanks all.
