In Wing 16/07 - Typhoon warning?
I arrived this morning from JNB and had a very pleasant shower in The Pier. When I tried getting back to the arrivals side around 09:30 for my first visit to Hong Kong proper I was advised by the CX rep that there was a level 3 Typhoon warning and I would be taking a chance on getting stranded in town.
So I am now standing by for the afternoon flights to BKK rather than my scheduled evening departure. But what mystifies me is that I don't see any evidence of a typhoon in any weather report. Anyone know anything? Should I continue with my sightseeing for today? I am now in The Wing. Dead quiet. |
I suggest you check out the Hong Kong Observatory's website for full information:

http://www.weather.gov.hk/contente.htm Thanks for the heads up. Looks like when I arrived there was no warning. Glad I took a long shower! Only wish I could get into the cabanas in the first class part of the lounge to sleep. |
Here is your typhoon, sitting flat over HKG: http://www.cwb.gov.tw/V4e/weather/sa...16-07-2004.jpg

Yes
Yes Number 8 signal is hoisted and various public transportations are shutting down after transporting people home from work. I will advise you to stay in the lounge... I will try to standby for the earliest flight possible... the typhoon is heading straight to HK and I will say the typhoon will pass by at the late afternoon... let see how it goes!
Good luck! Carfield |
Flights are still running at present, i am watching closely as Sean is on his way to join me in Beijing this evening..

Napping and Sleeping, what is the difference?? hahahah
BTW do they offer the Cabanas in the Pier as well. As I only used the Wing before for F Class. Also how many Cabanas are available? |
The Pier has day rooms (which may be better for sleeping) but no cabanas. The Wing has approx. 8 cabanas and sometimes there is a wait for one to become available, hence the comments about the inappropriateness of people using a cabana for hours on end. But CX won't trouble you about it, only your conscience might (the latter sounds unlikely from the moral tone of some people who have made "me first, second and third" into a fine art).

hahahah
Thanks So compare to the Cabanas to the day rooms, which ones are better? Also in the day rooms do they have a full bath in there? Also is there a refreshment cabinet as well? |

As I have never experienced the first class side of the Pier/Wing, I was perhaps confusing the dayroom aspect with the Cabanas experience. I was surprised to see no provision for napping on the business class side. However, the staff were wonderfully gracious in providing a blanket first for my 4 year old son who was sleeping in two of the armchairs positioned together to form a crib and then when seeing that I was catching some shut eye in a more vertical position, brought me a blanket, too. The CX staff were great. Nobody ever said to me "Award ticket". They put us on the full 2:20 pm flight, protecting us in J, rather than have us chance our booked evening flight to Bangkok. |
The typhoon was quite enjoyable to watch from the comfort of the Wing, although I felt very sorry for the ground crew, especially during the strong lashing of rain HK got during 5-6pmish. It was my first HK typhoon - despite flying thru regularly I always seem to just miss them (which is probably a good thing, but I did so want to see a real one in action).
As it turned out (aviation wise anyway) Tropical Cyclone Kampasu turned out to be a fairly mild one (captain's words not mine) and operations seemed unaffected. Although I did see some fairly weird gate assignments. The SQ865 seems to have obtained a permanent position at 1 but I'd never seen a China Airlines or Swiss take 3 before. What's happening to the concept of the CX preferred gates? |
