$1000 plus a free future upgrade and still in business to JNB---what are you so upset about?

Let me share something with you...

I was taking a flight between BKK and SIN a couple of years ago. I had a full F class ticket. Not AONE, but fare basis F. I was confirmed in J because it was a 2 class aircraft. I arrived 60 minutes prior to departure. I was not even downgraded to Y but rather, bumped off the flight. I was GOLD (OW-Sapphire). CX in BKK bumped all fare paying J class passengers off to accomodate all the upgraded Y class passengers because they changed from a 773 to a 772 at the last minute and there was a serious overbooking situation. The ground staff offered to put us on the next flight which was a GARUDA flight. We all declined. I went on SQ and most people went on TG.

I wrote, complained etc etc. even all the way to the top. And all my friend and I got were 2 upgrade vouchers per person. Abeit the vouchers were valid indefinitely and can be confirmed immediately with no capacity control. I've used mine already but 2+ years on, my friend still has his on his MPC account.

So you got $$ too. I say, keep it and let this issue go. There are worst things happening in the world today than being 'downgraded'. At least they didn't try to put you on GARUDA.

About 2 months ago my wife I were in F from MNL to HKG and they substituted with 2 cabin equipment. CX had a release form and approx 700USD in Pesos at the counter for each of us when we walked up. This struck me as WAY WAY overly generous, but we of course accepted.

MNL-HKG is not quite HKG-JNB! So very generous!

Two - three years ago, I had nearly the same experience, except I was flying ICN-HKG. Currency proferred was actually fresh U.S. currency, rather than Won, which was better for me!! (Roughly same amount of cash.)

Happy Ending!

I confirmed seats 24 hrs in advance. Then, on arrival at HKG, was told that flight was oversold in F, 8 pax had already checked in and we were being downgraded to J! Not only that, but the worst J seats, in the rear of the cabin right by the economy cabin.
We were offered about $1000 each in compensation (which was the fare difference plus "a goodwill gesture") - we were on AONE fares so the difference wasn't great. We were also offered upgrades if we flew Cathay in the next 12 months, which we aren't going to be doing.
Can I expect any further compensation if I complain further? What can I ask for?
Is this a frequent occurrance? I was appalled, I didn't think this happened in F!

Nice update: just received 85000 Asia miles EACH for the distress caused by our downgrade :D . I think this more than compensates us - well done Cathay!
