Cathay is ordering new planes for third runway expansion
Below content is in Chinese:
from TVB News: 國泰訂購150架空中巴士飛機 冀把握三跑系統啟用帶來機遇 https://news.tvb.com/tc/local/67175ffe8392d14e47e7e6e5?utm_source=newsappshare&u tm_medium=referral Anyone can expect what aircraft is CX ordering ? 1. A320neo 2. A321neo 3. A330-900 4. A350-900 5. A350-1000 6. A350F |

They are expected to be delivered from 2028 to join the Cathay fleet and primarily serve destinations in Asia.
So it’s really only 30 confirmed orders for A330-900s with a massive amount of spin taking that up to the “150” headline figure. The article talks about 52 options but it isn’t exactly clear that those are all new. Oh, also reported by Bloomberg a few hours ago. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/business...isappointment/ |

Last time they bought 30 planes they needed to make a Major Transaction announcement https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/li...4082800405.pdf I still haven't seen this purchase's announcement yet https://news.cathaypacific.com/ . If it is just additional 30, I have a feeling we won't see the announcement til 9:29:59 tomorrow. |

Actually, some of the articles are quite confusing about what if anything, has actually been ordered. Danny Lee’s article seems clearest (as I’d hoped!) - looks like this was just a PR event for orders that were already placed and disclosed in the filing you linked to. |
Not new orders at all
64 A320/321 orders which have been placed 6 A350F which have been placed plus 20 options 30 A330 confirm orders plus 30 option. so all these add up to 150. |

Who cares, Hong Kong airport is dead. The third runway is the biggest white elephant in recent memory. How come London Heathrow can handle almost two times the traffic with only two runways and a curfew?

I'm sure CX (for now) is done with ordering planes until the B777-300 needs to go (which I doubt) |

CX september traffic was 1.8 million pre covid 3 mill a month was the norm. the fact that the CEO admitted that Gatwick, Rome etc are not viable , goes to show that consumers are actively avoiding CX and HKG. |
That being said if CX actually wants to expand and develop the HKG hub they desperately need aircraft.
Otherwise their fleet size.will be smaller than 2019 even in 2028 |
Mods, I suggest the title of this thread should be changed because it’s completely inaccurate.
Cathay did not and is not making any new order. There was en event held yesterday to “celebrate” the Cathay-Airbus relationship and it cited the “up to 150” aircraft which includes options (eg 30 firm A330neo orders plus 30 options). Yes, two of the speeches did mention the third runway, but the original article which supplied the title for this thread either did not understand the subject and the connection between that and the luncheons/press event, or is over-reaching for a relevant and potentially click-baity headline. |
Just read the original news article by TVB (posted by OP) and it is a horrendously lazy and inaccurate piece of journalism. Completely misleading - makes it sound like they ordered 150 planes in a signing ceremony yesterday for the purpose of taking advantage of the 3rd runway.

And further down the thread the evidence given is "they don't serve Gatwick" (yet serve LHR 5x a day) and "they don't serve FCO" - a holiday destination really that was not indicative of traffic coming to HK. Please. CX not serving your preferred destinations when it has opened new routes post-pandemic that had not existed for years is not the slam dunk against HKG coming back that you think it is. There are a number of foreign airlines who have been waiting for the three runway system to come on line to serve the city or expand service. There is stuff like cargo operations (with HKG the world's number one cargo airport) going on that makes a comparison to airports where ops are more passenger oriented inapposite. |

Thanks for the quick sum. The “option” part did the trick that brought up to 150.
How many more narrow bodies is CX getting? From all the reviews I read, I wouldn’t want to encounter them too often. The company said it would buy 30 Airbus aircraft on top of the previously ordered 70 as part of its investment drive, taking total orders to up to 150 including purchase options. It posted a 15.3 per cent year-on-year decline in net profit, to HK$3.61 billion (US$460 million), for the first half of 2024. The Post has learned that the company plans to raise the capital through bank loans. The investment included purchasing 30 Airbus A330-900 aircraft, with the right to buy another 30 in the future. They are expected to be delivered from 2028 to join the Cathay fleet and primarily serve destinations in Asia. The latest purchase is on top of 70 previously ordered aircraft, with an option to buy 52 more. |
