Oh wow thats news for me. I thought it was a technical issue or something for me and only me, so I always check in at the counter. Interesting!

Sometimes BP is not available online at all.

My flight from PEN last month I can check-in online 48-hours prior but BP is available only at the airport.

You become a "member" solely by creating a login. That's when they issue you a number. So if you're logged in with your account/number and managing your flight, the 48h check-in option should theoretically be available, regardless of which FF number you're crediting to...or so I thought. The terms say it's available to "members," not "members only earning Asia Miles on the flight."

Came here to mention that I used my AA FF when booking, and did not log in as CX member or quote CX number. Received a T-48 check in email.

edit: actually no mystery here. Just found this bit on their reserve your seat page.

If you’re a Cathay or  oneworld member, online check-in will open 48 hours before your flight departure time for all passengers in your booking. Otherwise, online check-in opens 24 hours before your flight departure time.

As recently as early April, I had no problem checking in online as a guest (with BAEC number) 48h before a CX flight.

Question, if I am on a transit, does it mean the check in will only open when the second flight's departure is T-48 too?

Negative, you'll check in for all flights together
(of course, as they don't want you to practise skiplagging)

Today is the first time I got body-blocked by the 48 hour priority check-in policy.
Checking in a status-less friend of mum's to Japan - the auntie was travelling under Canadian docs, which has a different name to her HKID/AM name.

Can't do it - not even after calling into AM. Stuck til T-24.

But I'm curious why I never hit it before.

- I always replace my FFP to at least replace my FQTS with a non-CX number: 48 hours
--- Even when I am using cash i.e. FQTR not AM
--- I think this has something to do with the status of my FQTS (at least OWS?)(?)

- Only one passenger needs to be OWS/AM
--- my mother is sometimes name-conflicted like Auntie https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...l#post30415052
--- but my mother has never travelled alone since policy implementation either a) not using her AM name *and* b) not with me or my wife (also at least OWS).

I was able to check-in 48 hours before my flight a few days ago.

(I think doing what I do excludes me from the 24-hour post-booking cool-off period though. I suppose I could just add the Asia Miles number when I book and then swap it to the BA one after 24 hours ...)

What is the 24-hour post-booking cool-off period ?

I have a flight booked with a Cathay Pacific ff#. Its a new account, first time flying with them.
Should I wait until after checkin to try and change ff# to AA to improve my chancces of getting the 48hr?

According to their website, if you book a flight whilst logged in you can cancel it within 24 hours at no charge.

You should then wait 24 hours before adding a non-cathay FF number (not 100% sure this is necessary).

Ok. Thanks. My flight was booked a few weeks ago. I am a little nervous to change it though because I do not have seat location and I am Economy Light. I really want that 48 hour checkin. My flight is 2am local time so I think 48 hours before there wont be a lot of people awake checking in. I will make sure I am up or set my alarm. I was thinking of trying to change it at airport.

If I remember correctly (it's been a while) I could log in to Cathay and check in 48 hours before the flight despite having my BA frequent flyer number associated with the booking.

brunos Sep 17, 2025 4:01 am

I could always check-in online within 48h as a BA OWE (even OWS).

Most of the cases yes, but occasionally it doesn’t work, and can only check in 24 hours before the flight. Probably another system glitch that no one can explain.

Someone just sent me a link that American Airlines does not credit any points for flying Eco Light , so will just leave it as is

Most CX Economy booking classes do not earn AA miles per https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/...ay-pacific.jsp, but if you are booked in Y, B, or H, an ECONLIGHT should still be eligible for miles.
