Fuel charges sky-rocketed?
 
I was redeeming a simple one-way HKG-LHR on CX economy. It is now 27,000 asia miles (down from previous 30,000) but "taxes" are HKD 1,278! This was only about HKD 350 recently and the rest is fuel.

Does anyone have an explanation for this rise?

No it's always been like these. Cathay have levied fuel surcharges for a couple of years now (including award redemptions). The tax is HKD 355 from HKG to LHR (all HK departure taxes; typical for a flight this length) and HKD 923 is fuel surcharge
