As I mentioned upthread, I would definitely focus on Thailand. It's one of the countries that is easy to get to from HK at present. In terms of Oneworld options for leaving, I'd probably focus on QR first. I know their cash fares are reasonable, so I assume they release some award space.

Does HK still have PCR testing capacity / turn around time to support intl travels? my friend who had a ticket out of HK had to delay last week because he wasn't able to get his test result back in time to catch the flight. couple other friends are trying to leave as well, seems like BKK is the best shot for them.

OP does have a high preference to fly OW (OK, can be done from BKK), IIRC on a redemption ticket (tricky), though on one ticket HKG-BKK-EU would be nearly impossible. So, there is no option other than to break the journey at BKK, when flying OW.

My understanding is, that even with a "mandatory" quarantine at BKK, you can easily break the quarantine, when you want to fly out (check, check, check).

And BKK-NRT/HND-LHR on a OW redemption ticket should be feasible and (after checking) having availability at AsiaMiles ON JL, early March. 90000 Miles for a One Way J. Check for the transit in Japan.

I think a nrt to hnd airport transit landside us not allowed unless you can enter japan.
Also an overnight transit at nrt is not allowed as it closes at night.
a same day transit at nrt is OK as is a hnd transit

I've only researched Phuket recently (not a fan of Bangkok), but it appears you can definitely break quarantine there if you take another international flight out.

As of today, there is no transfers allowed between NRT and HND. Even you can enter Japan, you are looking at quarantine times. JAL does have several flights leave BKK early enough to connect in NRT or HND, so I don't think you need to over night in the airport in Japan. I was looking at flights for my friends in HK. Right now they all want to get to BKK, stay for 1 or 2 days, then head state side via either QR or SQ. transit through Japan is another option, but seems like on paid fare, QR and SQ has much better pricing in biz class.

One of the Japan options in AsiaMiles was a 25h trip with a change at NRT, so something like a 10h transit.

QR with AsiaMiles redemption did not give any options. Looks like QR is banned from AsiaMiles. The same for AY. (Or Maybe the opposite around, QR/AY do not provide availability to AsiaMiles).

SQ does have nice options to travel to/from BKK, however OP wants OW, and it'll be a long time, before SQ would join OW.......

I wasn't aware of that; it does kind of hamper the OW out of Thailand idea because they seem to have far more capacity than other OW carriers there. They are still listed on the Asia Miles website though, so maybe a phone call would be worth the effort.

I was talking about paid biz fare on SQ. especially a chance to fly on the SIN-EWR ultra-long haul.

It is very hard to find anything using AsiaMiles out of HK if travel dates are not flexible, especially when a lot of people want to leave.

Trying to leave for Europe around 2 March. No business class available under HKD40 one way and horrible routing. Actually no seats on some days unless you are ready for a 40h trip.

Well, effectively, the only reasonable option would be el-cheapo Y to BKK, stay 2-3 days and then el-cheapo J, where ever you want to go. Especially, SQ does a good job providing a reliable flight schedule for affordable prices.

That's a pretty sweet deal. If I were the OP (or anyone else trying to leave HK), I'd forgo trying to use miles and jump on that.

yep, SQ does have pretty aggressive pricing, early on during opening up of destinations. Later on, pricing becomes again SQ high for the same destinations.

So, yeah, don't wait to long, otherwise your affordable options are history. And, indeed, forget the saved miles, IF OP's main target is "leaving Hong Kong".

You are right that fares exThailand are cheap. But it is a different order of magnitude in terms of hassle, especially if you travel back to Europe with a family and heavy luggage. A direct (e.g. QR. EK. TK, .SQ) flight from HK does not require you to take a pre-departure PCR; those in HK know the benefit. To go to Bangkok, you need to take a pre-departure PCR, apply for a Thailand pass (could take several days), buy insurance and book a SHA+ hotel with PCR test organized by the hotel (stay in room until negative result) for day 1 and 5. Good luck if you test positive then. From march 7 the day-5 requirement is lifted (RAT instead) so that will be a bit easier.
