Nothing surprising here.

Seems like every day in Hong Kong . Then again, currently I don't sleep in my mask and rejoice when I'm home to be mask free... Overall, practical and if it gets me back to being allowed on long haul flights I'm all for it.

However, not sure how I will "chug" back my champagne in business/first in this scenario. Tips? Oh yes,

Does that mean in my 1-2-1 seating I can relax without a mask (maybe if the middle seats are empty?)... Would even First meet that standard?

I'm more worried about this one, and I can imagine a lot of people throwing tantrums if forced to wear a mask during the flight:

Passengers who are unable to tolerate a face covering, including children under six years old, are exempt from this requirement

By who's "justification?" Cathay Pacific themselves say exactly the opposite. I mean their own text quite literally says, "Passengers who are unable to tolerate a face covering, including children under six years old, are exempt from this requirement."

Regards

They better have a pretty good explanation why they cant cover their face, have a doctors note attesting the explanation and arrive early enough for ground agents to call the doctor to cross check. Mask wearing is almost a religion here.

Indeed, you'd feel extremely awkward and receive angry stares from other passengers if you go without one... so I don't think CX would need much effort to enforce this.

Agreed, and for the context of those who it is not clear. Hong Kong currently has something like a 99.9% mask wearing conformance on public transportation, it is very rare to see someone without a mask now (noting that in January 2020 it was probably nearer 95%, including people like myself who didn't wear a mask all the time, but have subsequently decided it is a good idea).

The bigger complexity is less boarding/sitting (I sit in my work office with a mask now for 8+ hours/day), but rather that everyone takes off their mask to eat (particularly on a long haul flight) it becomes more challenging. Hong Kong does the same thing in restaurants (clearly you need a mask off to access your mouth), but there needs to be social distancing between tables of 1.5m and similar under current rules. As I joked on earlier, it would probably be ok for business/first class, but economy will be tough.

Still, anything that gets us flying again!

Most airlines are imposing face masks. That is true in USA and Europe. There might be exceptions but not sure how long they will last. QR seems to be an exception, but I doubt that it will last long now that Qatar has made wearing masks outside home mandatory, from 17 May.

It seems this is not a surprise but rather come late, for a flight that I took back in Feb (regional flight), its like everyone (100%) already with mask on. Long haul flight might be a different story

Yeh the city now has like 99.9% with mask on, both on street and in public traffic, one will look odd if you are not with mask on and people will try to avoid contact/ standing next to you.
And yes I have my mask on for 8 hours in office everyday for the past 3.5 months, so dont see a problem with mask on for long haul flight anymore after all these "training".

I imagine many PICs will refuse to fly until the pax is offloaded.

Law of the sea - PIC are bound by owner's instructions while at high seas. Presumably they will feel bound when taking pax into high seas too. Offloaded pax may raise a court case against the owner (CX) at the point of origin for discrimination and force the owner to change his mind (or lose its landing rights) but the PIC is bound by owner's instructions until then.

From what I am hearing, those with asthma, lung /breathing difficulties may be unable to wear a mask. I have no idea how one would know and if they would even be required to show proof.

When I flew last week (domestic), almost everyone had a mask on all the time. Others put theirs on when going through security and then boarding.

Simple. A fit to fly letter. If you raise breathing difficulty for exemption GAs will immediately demand to see fit to fly (pressurization emergency etc)
