I had a flight booked using asiamiles flying via Japan airlines, however they are still not allowing us citizens. Anyone have luck having Asiamiles cancel the flight and what is the penalty? Also, those were booked using miles that were expiring last year. Would I lose the miles
From what I've gathered here, is the best option to "miss" the flight (if it's not canceled) and then contact AM the following day and ask them to re-instate the expired miles? My flight to Japan is March 29th 2022 and I doubt the borders will be open by then.

I do not have any contacts but have this advice. I was successful with the chat function (although it took about 2 hours to confirm a reservation.). The reservation was not what I wanted (I wanted to do a 23-hour stopover in an international gateway, Madrid from tel Aviv.) The connecting flight to BCN was showing 3 flights available on Cathay pacific's website, but the agent could not achieve this goal-it was very frustrating. I finally got a temporary PNR out of her, and need to call back again in the middle of the night in 2 nights/early mornings. They did offer to reinstate and extend miles that expired on1/1/22 to 7/31/23, but I chose to instead try to use the darn things for a flight from TLV to BCN thought Madrid. Hopefully, I will be able to get the one-night 23-hour connection in Madrid when I call back again, wasting 2+ hours in the middle of the night on the 21st of January. I am grateful they did agree to reinstate 43,000 Asia miles, so I can use them and never darken their doors again!

Well, having to step in for an local acquaintance:
1. Chinese Asia Miles chat, Hong Kong Chinese member: you get clunked a recommendation to redeem now or make a selection from lifestyle.asiamiles.com, they don't even bother offering a challenge.
2. English Asia Miles chat, Hong Kong Chinese member:
3. Non-Chinese member with foreign address: unconditional extension
This kind of behaviour makes me shed no tears if CX goes under. Just let me redeem the last mil of miles at $0.058, then I'm gone...
I'm even using hacks to avoid even crediting 3,000 AM (I just don't want to deploy the hack for the acquaintance, after getting the challenge).

Suddenly things make sense. When I first (incorrectly) contacted MPC by phone to renew my expired miles I had a Shenzhen address on my account. The guy said it would take a few days. I then did some housekeeping on my account and changed the address to a HK address where I was temporarily staying (never to return to Shenzhen). The guy called me back asking me to change the address back to Shenzhen in order to do the extension without explaining this condition. I tried to do this but the address change form wouldn't accept the address change back to mainland China (can't remember why it wouldn't let me submit but I tried a few times) so I eventually changed it to my London address. Still didn't get the extension applied so I contacted Asia Miles chat after a week and they did it immediately. So, yes, one rule for foreigners and one rule for HKers. I can understand how enraging this must be given the practical impossibility of redeeming AMs for any flight other than a one-way trip out of there which I did on December 30.

Thanks. I contacted them and I was told they are only doing it if the miles are expiring 'this' month.
Last year I had contacted them in november/december and I was told they are extending only for the miles expiring 'this year'.
I am guessing next time it is going to be 'this' week!

Anyone has miles expiring can follow the steps below to extend your miles for one year.
(1) Go to CX US website (MUST BE US SITE) https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_US.html to book a ticket involving any US ports as origin or destination on your miles expiring date, e.g. 31 May 2021 before 23:59 HKG TIME using the miles plus cash option. Use up all your expiring miles to book the ticket.
(2) Tickets booked on the US site with any US ports in the itinerary can be cancelled free of charge within 24 hours under the US DOT policy. Make sure you CALL CX to cancel the tickets on 1 June (HKG TIME) and request a refund . Don’t use the online refund form.
(3) Cash portion will be refunded to your card and your miles will go back to your account with one year extension as a gesture of goodwill without charge.
Reminder:
You should check the time zone as you must follow HKG time. Set an alarm to remind yourself to cancel the ticket within 24 hours. NOTE THAT THE FIRST FLIGHT SHOULD BE MORE THAN 7 DAYS FROM THE TICKET ISSUING DATE, or otherwise not covered by US DOT.
