I have a baggage situation and I was wondering if someone can share their experience.
I'm flying CX and I have a baggage allowance of 1pc luggage for a 23kg limit.
I have an item that doesn't fit in my suitcase but my suitcase combined + my item is less than 23kg. The item is about 60x60x60cm in size, I can have it boxed up.

What kind of charges will be imposed in the situation presented?
Whilst I'm at it, what charges will be applied if my combined weight is greater than 23kg?

It looks like a flight to or from New Zealand which appears to be the only destination with a limit of both 23kg and one piece of luggage to/from HKG.

HK$1300/NZD$200 per extra piece and an extra HK$1300 if oversized (158cm limit vs. the regular allowance size limit of 203cm) And though it should not apply in this case, another HK$1300 if overweight so HK$2600 for overweight and oversized.

Looks like the flugelhorn or whatever it is should be checked as the first piece since that one can be up to 203cm total and 23kg. Second piece which one assumes is smaller than the 180cm of the ottoman or whatever, would just be the extra luggage piece charge of HK$1300/NZD$200 and not HK$2600.

This is like one of those logic puzzles. The combined weight is X and under the 23kg limit, the size of a mystery thing Y is under 180cm but must weigh less than 23kg, and the other thing Z, its weight added to the weight of thing Y is less than 23kg but you are not told the size of Z.

OP suggestion: Just say how big each thing is and what it weighs. But the CX website is clear enough, step by step with sizes and weights. The biggest catch is that the 2nd piece is not allowed to be as big as the first piece. So the 180cm is the first piece and the more compliant one is the 2nd piece.

Put your other luggage into another box and tape the two together so they are one piece?

He's allowed 203cm total and the mystery item is 180 cm (60X60X60) leaving 23cm or 9" for all 3 dimensions added together to be within limits. So the dimensions of three decks of cards combined together which would be a pretty tiny suitcase indeed.

Perhaps if there are air pockets in the 60X60X60 box with the special item within, stuff them with clothes and such and have no suitcase at all?

Good plan. When I had to ship my microwave home from Perth (I had been "living" in a hotel room for months, so purchased a microwave) I also filled up all the spaces with clothes and other items to save space (and protect the inside of the microwave!).

I don't know Perth vs. where I am but it is hard to find a microwave here that costs $200 so not worth paying the fees. Plus your socks and underwear stashed inside the oven attract dogs when you wear them.

What fees? It was within my luggage allowance, that was the point. And I clean things before packing them.
