Boarding pass issue
Confused second-time CX flyer here.
I'm on CX872 tonight (technically tomorrow morning), HKG-SFO in premium econ. CX app let me check in but refused to issue me a boarding pass. That seemed strange so I checked flightaware and it was telling me that the plane was a 773 (it was scheduled on a 77W). I was wondering if this was an equipment swap / involuntary downgrade issue (no way I'm sitting in a regular econ seat for 12-15 hr -- I simply don't fit). I tried to call them but the call kept dropping while I was on hold. I checked EF and it's still saying that it's a 77W. On a whim I tried the website and it happily emailed me a boarding pass with my originally selected seat in premium econ. So now I'm just confused. Does anyone know which plane this actually is? Am I probably good to go since I have a boarding pass with a seat in the correct cabin? Is there a more reliable way than phone to contact CX? Would a 77W to 773 change cause downgrades? (I'm not sure what the cabin sizes are) Thanks in advance for any info... |

Congrats on post 2222 (perhaps a good luck sign for you)! I can't comment on 77W v 773, but I've never heard of anyone (self included) being downgraded from PE. When PE is oversold, they tend to roll elite members forward to J.
Some places in CX's website it just says 773 for the generic term 777-300, unidentified whether it's ER or not. I can see how that might cause concern if you're anxious and don't fly CX a lot. You can be certain SFO is flown by either 77W or A350. Also fyi, US destinations are a 24 hour max before BP. It's not CXs choice. So while normally for CX flights you can get 48 hours, US flights are 24. That might explain it. We mauntain the following Gsheet regarding CXs fleet it should prove useful to you. The flight is showing 0's across the board for inventory on EF.

Here's to hoping that you end up in J, as a result, but I hope you didn't jinx yourself by adding posts 2223 and 2224 prior to the flight.:D
I'm the furthest from elite there will be on this flight. I don't even have an asiamiles account. But.. but.. but... mvp gold! 🤣 |

OP, your thread title is about boarding pass, but your question is about possible equipment swap

Anyway, it all worked out fine. I flew home on my preselected seat. No SSSS, no issues at the airport. I'm guessing that this was some sort of strange glitch with the app (this was all within 24hr from takeoff, so not the US 24hr rule) |

2017 I took CX846 first from HKG to JFK, online check-in, could not issue boarding pass, find out in the airport that my boarding pass had SSSS, and took forever to secondary check, I end up on board almost the last one |
I've been gifted with SSSS 3 times in the past 3 years out of HKG, Although it was really only a minor hassle. Last time the secondary screening happened after scanning BP in the same area they used to do the bottle check on the US bound flights. They had me remove shoes and swabbed my hands, shoes and bag. Took less than 5 minutes. Other 2 times was similar experience. Each time I got SSSS, check-in agent apologized and told me it was random.
