Lounge Etiquette

Think some of us should print this out and show to that xxx when he/she is talking loudly on the phone !

https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...etiquette.html

..
  • Please ensure your attire and conduct is consistent with a professional environment, and refrain from causing offence or disturbing fellow passengers.
  • To keep noise levels to a minimum, please wear headphones when using personal devices, set your mobile ringer to vibrate, and keep conversations low.
  • Parents are requested to monitor the behaviour of their children, and to discourage any shouting, running or jumping on the furniture....

I have given up. The Pier J, when it opened was like a zoo and is still is at times.

I don't think the Pier J is that bad though... I've always felt the Wing J is a lot more like a night market.

bhyq Mar 23, 2018 6:48 am

If time allows, the bridge and the pier being furthest from immigration tend to be quieter and worth the journey to escape the masses!

ermen Mar 23, 2018 9:07 am

i didnt know there was this etiquette guide
in future i will print multiple copies and give to those offenders

Cathay Dragon 666 Mar 23, 2018 10:44 am

Speaking of etiquette. I was going to Pier J deep inside area where there are beds for people to rest quietly? WRONG. There's a family of 8 (4 grand parents, 2 parents, 2 children) that was talking loudly in the area with sofas and big soft cushion stands.

I must've been there at the same time as you (or most likely a re-occuring event). When I was trying to get some rest you could easily hear them talking, plus all the way on the otherside, there was some one (not associated with this group) watching something on their smartphone with volume on full blast.

no1cub17 Mar 25, 2018 8:09 am

Still sounds way more tolerable than the average Admirals Club.

Why should you do it?

In fact - CX should give this out to every lounge visitor to ensure they understand these.

it reoccurs on a daily basis.

Happens to me everytime I visit the Pier J, unfortunately. The exception I’ve seen are during late night departures at around 10 or just before the lounge closes a bit after midnight.

That actually is a pretty good idea, really. Especially if they print them on those transit guide envelopes.

Better yet, they could put up subtle little signs on the tables in the lounge.

sxc Mar 25, 2018 7:09 pm

Do you think that those who are prone to this behaviour will read these and change their behaviour?

Not necessarily, although it should help that there are explicitly written rules that suggest against such behaviour. Some people just don't bother because there aren't signs explicitly telling them not to do so.

I wouldn't say this would work like magic, but it could definitely help a bit.

fairhsa Mar 26, 2018 2:10 am

I'm assuming that most of those commenting on this thread don't live in Hong Kong. You are not talking about the Pier or the Wing or any lounge. You are talking about the behaviour of (if you are lucky) a HK local and if you are unlucky, a Mainland chinese person / family. And those expats who have been here so long we forget what normal behaviour is like! :)

HK is noise. It just is. And yes, I hate it too!

Let's not point the finger and let this discussion degenerate into a race-based discussion. We all know that there are impolite people from all parts of the world.

well, if the agents do get themselves (along with CX the corporate) to kick out people who talks on the phone not in a designated area or sleep on sofas then it would (eventually) change.

i was in the PP lounge in IST and they have a sign saying not to put ur feet on table. people DO stop when staff points at the sign at them. For the 6 hours i was there its only the same ethnic group who does it, AND complies to the agent.

So i guess having a sign allows staff to take action easier. just like how the lounges in japan has signs of no mobile phone, and in reality they really mean not to talk on the phone.

Sorry, but I have to defend the original poster here. There was nothing "race-based" about that comment. Hong Kongers can be some of the rudest, most impolite human beings of any major city. Behaviour that is either tolerated or even deemed acceptable here is frowned upon in pretty much every other major financial centre. It has nothing to do with race--it's an issue with this city, and its culture.

I understand your role as a moderator, and if this was after a series of multiple comments I would understand, but the original poster's comment, particularly as a one-off, was completely fair, and in no way racist.

How about people walking around the lounge Facetiming with other people...

Someone needs to post the flyers up at every lounge in HK lol

Of course it can't stop everything. But at the minimum, it can reduce the occurrence.

So do you suggest not to do everything at all?

I agree that publishing these “rules” on an obscure link in the CX website isn’t going to help!

it would then be easier for the others or the agent to refer to before sending them out.

While I applaud the idea of putting up the signs, I've made it an Instagram habit of posting pictures of people doing exactly what the sign prohibits, usually standing right next to the sign or under it (no smoking, no parking, strollers-only, etc.) I just assume that whoever it is (HKer, Mainlander, or otherwise) is illiterate. ;)

It's quite an amusing thing and given how often it happens, I'm dubious of the effectiveness of putting up signs without some sort of enforcement (i.e. someone from CX has to periodically remind people of the signs).

it is possible if cx are willing to do it

San Pelegrino and Acqua Panna are not back in the fridge of The Pier...unfortunately I also saw someone packing 6 bottles of San Pelegrino into his carry on.

Next time, feel free to photograph and post his face. People do this stuff because they can; no one calls them on it. It's theft and they know it.

Stealing mineral water? Are they stockpiling ahead of the typhoon? At least its not Mumm.

ermen Sep 17, 2018 9:39 pm

how many bottles is one allowed to reasonably take away from the lounge for their own consumption onboard?

the restaurant turned me away for getting 2 one time. but other than that one time noone ever stopped me from getting any amount of water. but i have never gotten more than 4 between 2 people in 1 go (and i start drinking 1).

ha interesting!

I think picking up somewhere in the neighborhood of maybe 3, definitely 4 is when it gets "excessive". 3, or even 2 I suppose might not be cool either. Although I am guilty of 2. Obviously less is better than more on the moral scale here.

I often grab two; one for myself, one for Mrs. Qrc (who often leaves the lounge a bit before me for shopping, and inevitably always forgets a bottle for herself...). I usually open mine as I walk out just because I'm thirsty.

6 is without question well over the line, in my book. Even if you have a whole family, go buy the water then. That just doesn't feel right.

Just my own two cents.

FlyPointyEnd Sep 17, 2018 11:04 pm

I normally pick up one...2 sometimes. I now they keep the bottled water behind the counter during Plaza Premium days...you have to ask but I never had a problem asking for 2. Just surprised that Sodexo has them now back in the fridge.

triplefives Sep 18, 2018 2:19 am

i will also say 6 is a bit excessive for one person (imagine two people grabbing 12 bottles). he's paying a heavy penalty as those are glass bottles.

Dave510 Sep 18, 2018 5:27 am

I follow "buffet rules". I only take what I've already opened and can't be consumed by anyone else. That's just me and I wouldn't really judge anyone for taking 1 to go.

6 is just far too excessive though.

andersonCooper Sep 18, 2018 5:43 am

For US-bound pax it's impossible to take more than 1, so I am used to not taking anything.

HaikalS Sep 18, 2018 5:47 am

First world problem but I almost always take two because much prefer San Pellegrino to the Perrier they have on J

You're not eve allowed to take any for Australia bound flight from what I remember. So either he is flying to Europe...or somewhere within the region and plans to give the San Pelegrino to friends as gifts ;)
