Wireless Internet @ the Wing

After having given up on trying to connect to CX's advertised wireless network several times and having had no success, despite enlisting the help of several employees and passengers, I was diligently re-typing a draft of an e-mail I had composed on my laptop into a CX desktop when a lovely CX agent approached me and asked if it wouldn't be easier if I connected my laptop directly to the wireless network, and proceeded to provide me with the WEP key to the access point.

Eureka!

I have asked if the network was encrypted several times before and I have always been told that it was not. I always thought I had the problem but never had the time to look into it. Suffice it to say I am no network guru but I found it strange that the network here was the one of only a few in the world I had a problem with. If anyone needs the key, let me know.

I didn't know we need a key.

I have been able to access it just by turning on my notebook.

SQ's KrisLounge in SIN needs a key now to access the wireless LAN there but at the Wing, is it new?

I was there as recently as 18 Aug.

Same here. I just open my iBook and voila... my "Airport" (Mac term for Wi-Fi) snifter detects the WiFi network called "cathay." No fuss whatsoever. Another WiFi network that shows up is PCCW but you need a username/password for that.

No WEP key necessary last time I was there, Aug 9, I think. Maybe this is a new procedure.

No WEP key needed for me in repeated visits in March and June.

I recall needing the key last time I used it, but that was probably a year ago. The key was given as part of the instructions handed out with the WLAN PCMCIA card which I borrowed from them.

I used my WiFi connection at Wing on 10th Aug. ESSID 'cathay', and no WEP key was needed.
I used it at Pier on 23rd Aug, also WEP key was not needed.

By the way, at CDG CX lounge, wireless LAN is available. ESSID is also 'cathay'
I used it on 21st Aug.

It must be a new procedure. I used the 'cathay' WiFi network on Aug 12th in The Wing. No key, no charge, no hassle.

No wireless access key needed in the Pier at the moment. Also no security at all is turned on, according to my s/w.

There are wired RJ45 jacks all over the place, too, but they don't react when a cable is plugged in and the desk thought some s/w was needed. Any ideas?

It is strange......

My Compaq Notebook (W2000) with a Lucent wireless card requires a WEP key entered.

My Sony (XP home) with the build in wireless just connects in the Wing. Tried several times.....

If somebody figutes this out i would love to know why.

I was at the Pier on Aug. 31. There was no need for any key to log on wirelessly. I really didn't notice any change there, at least as far as the Pier is concerned.

I was at the Pier on 31st Aug, too :-)
However, my connection from BKK to NRT was very tight, so I didn't check WiFi access.

I've used the access in TPE and HKG in the Wing with NO WEP key... HOWEVER, it is possible that your WLAN client/driver won't connect to plain WLAN's without a WEP key. See your software help for more details.

As an example, the MS XP WLAN support with SP1 DOESN'T connect by default to a WLAN with WEP support if you don't provide a key. You need to view available networks and "accept" that you have no WEP key before it will connect to the access point.

I have been having connection problems in the Wing during the past 30 days - same hardward and software config that has always worked in the past, so there may well be some issue. If someone has the WEP key, why not post it here

I'm sitting here in the Wing beating my brains out trying to connect, using the instruction chart provided by a staff member. No luck, as of yet, although my computer can see the connection.
