Bit of a problem with 747 upper deck

This is potentially something of a problem - neither the overhead bins nor the side lockers are anywhere near big enough to store a standard size (22x14x9inch) carry-on bag. So what is the option? Stow the bag somewhere downstairs where you have no idea what might happen to it during the 12 hour flight if you are upstairs, or take a downstairs seat.

This changes significantly the attractiveness of the upper deck in my view.

I'm flying on a 747 on the Upper Deck next month. Does this rule out placing a bag under the seat in front of me?

Actually the new Upper Deck overhead bins have been improved and ARE larger than the usual, older style ones, which flip down when opened. The newer ones, flip UP. These are the same bins used on BA's 747s Upper Deck too.

My usual TUMI rollaway has no problem fitting in the new overhead bins.\

FYI-nothing can fit in the seat in front of you due to the NBC seats' cubby hole which is where your feet are supposed to be when seats are reclined.

The upper deck cloakroom has been fitted with 2 big drawers to stow the small bottled water, since that tiny area has used up most of the weight limit, therefore they cannot hold any hand lugggages(including the Crew bags and my friends told me that in a full flight the upper deck cabin crew need to stow their bags inside the lift at the galley and send them down to the main deck during take off and landing, in the air, they need to leave the bags at the galley..)except hanging pax coats and it's difficult for them to get those bottled water once bags are stow infornt of the drawers.

besides according to my crew friends most the hand carries can be stowed at the upper deck overhand locker without any problem unless they are over loaded....

Hmmmm....I wonder if the new overhead bins are also equipped on the 74B's. IIRC, the 74B's have those pull-down bins that are tiny.... I guess I'll find out in a week. Fortunately my JFK-HKG flight this week is on the 74J....

Most likely the newer bins will be installed when the cabin has the NBC seats. So currently the 74Bs won't have to adhere to the above rules.
