88 Australians were killed in the Bali bombing (in proportion to the population this is equivalent to 1000 Americans, or close to the US citizen death toll in the World Trade center destruction). Perhaps that explains the extreme impact this incident has had upon Australia.

Can you expand on what you mean by NZ vs Bali and your preference for NZ?
I always thought NZ and BALI are completely different

They are (NZ is much better). One of the remarkable things about NZ is the diversity of the country (maybe the greatest of any single country in the world). The extreme north of NZ is somewhat like Bali (almost as poor, too -- very undeveloped and also very pristine and tropical). The beaches have names like 90 mile beach (and live up to the name). Some excellent scuba and deep sea fishing. The rest of NZ varies from temperate to glacial, but there is a tropical zone and it is pretty isolated. I wouldn't think twice about going to NZ in April, it is a great place. And cheap compared to Canada. That said, I'm going to NZ three times this year (full disclosure) and making a special trip to Bali to show the flag (I find the changes in Bali of the past decade to be painful to see, it is a transition that wasn't in the best interests of the inhabitants).

Just came back from Bali. Beautiful weather, beautiful island, etc... And with the dearth of tourists, everything is less crowded and easier to get to/from.

I recommend you go.

That is correct. Still, i will be going back to Bali twice this year. The way things are in the world at the moment, attacks could affect anyone at anytime and anywhere.

Don't really know. I booked the Sheraton Laguna Nusa Dua via the Starwood web site and got a suite upgrade for only 1k SPG points/night. Beautiful property, but also very empty. I think it was at <30% occupancy so I'm sure local travel agents in Asia can let you know about discounts.
