The JFK flight arrives too late for ongoing connections on AA anyway. That's also what the other gateways are for, ie SFO and LAX.

As I recall, the JFK flight arrives in time for ongoing connections to BOS Sunday through Friday (but not Saturday, when the latest JFK-BOS is cancelled?). That's helpful for those of us in BOS.

It's not possible to make a non-redeye connection from CX to BOS at LAX. (And the red-eye is a 757 -- not exactly a wonderful experience after J or F on CX! Though tolerable if you don't need more sleep.) At SFO, as I recall, it is possible, but then again there's currently only OBC to SFO.

So it can be a tough situation.

Why can't they just use the "International to US" transfer facilities at YVR and pre-clear all JFK bound pax (those in transit from HKG), and the "US Departures" area (for YVR-JFK pax) and have the flight arrive at a domestic gate at JFK? (maybe arrive at the AA terminal, so HKG-JFK pax on the AA codeshare can make easier connections to other US destinations?)</font>
US preclearance facilities are paid for by the airlines. Only airlines that pay for pre-clearance are allowed to present their passengers at the PFI.

You could "open-jaw" the itineary on http://www.cathay-usa.com if you haven't booked it. If you have, call CX and I believe they will charge $100.00 for a change fee. I did do the redeye AA LAX-BOX on the 757 and that spinach keesh they serve.....ee yah!
I passed so much gas, I was on Hydrogen! I booked it through CX's website and I was able to get it.

Nevertheless, what I do is use YYZ on the upper fare tix or award tix. After a *beautiful* stay in Toronto, I take the AA 2:45pm ERJ back to BOS. Then the MBTA home (the most dangerous leg of the entire trip).
