Overbooked for 3+ weeks... normal?

My brother just flew to Vancouver last week. Since he wanted to go back a day or so later, he offered to become a volunteer to be bumped to the next flight at the time of check-in. (Not asking any compensation or upgrade).

Well, to his surprise, CX said if he wasn't flying on the day (30th, Aug), he wouldn't be flying for a while. In fact, they mentioned that they've been super busy on HKG-YVR route for past weeks, and it's completely fully over-booked to 21st of September or so.

Eh... nearly 4 weeks of badly oversold flights on a city served by 2 direct CX flights? Is this normal? Is the condition the same for other Gateways like SFO and LAX?

Well, I wouldn't be surprise since it is the end of the summer holiday and lots of students are returning for the new school year.

u can check itn for the real situation before going to the airport.

i just looked at, e.g. 9/8, 9/9. there are 2 Y/B seats and plnety of J+ available.

when they expect the seats are tight, they tend to release the lower fare classes slowly, to protect teh revenue. and this is quite normal in tourist season, that is when the MPO Gold/Diamond guaranteed seat becomes really valuable --- in fact perhaps the "only" tangible benefit

Guaranteed seat at any economy class fare?

For a Diamond member at 24 hours notice and a Gold member at 72 hours, yes I believe so. If your itinerary meets all the rules of the ticketed sub-class.

It looks like lots of days from 3SEP to 21SEP, most subclasses (L below) are already closed, which could, of course, later open up, on HKGYVR.

Both HKGSFO and HKGLAX seem to be wide open throughout all the classes, except for a few days in the same period.

Perhaps a heavier load as one of the HKGYVR services goes to JFK?

yes, ANY published fare class.
BA Gold has similar benefit in BA flights.

you have to call the FFP, and usually they will put need a supervisor's authorization to get in done fairly soon.
