renewal or transfer of points?

i have some points that will expire soon but do not want to waste them. should i renew them at US$10 for every 2000 miles or transfer them? if i transfer them, will the points still expire on my expiry date or the person i transfered the points to expiry date?

any advice for a beginner?

i think it helps if you can tell us how many miles you have now, and how many more you expect to earn before the next expiry date ? then some of us might be able to make some suggestions on what's the best use of those miles...

for miles transferred, i think they are valid for another 3 years after the transfer...and, transfer costs twice as much as renewal, i think...

but in general i always think the cost of renewing or transferring miles is very high...

thks, tedhl. at the moment i have 34,996 (embarassed to mention since you guys accumulate at least twice this amount in a week!!) with an additional 20,000 coming within the next 3-4 weeks.

i have 10239 expiring on 31mar03
2561 on 31mar04
21996 on 31mar05
200 on 31mar06

i would like enough to fly return first class(something most of you FTers frequent just about 'every day'!!) to SYD. i don't travel much due to work but when i do, it's cathay all the way, in ey.
