747 with new J?
Cathay Pacific has posted a third fleet type for its 747's, a 74Y.
Is this the designation for the 747's with the new J? It seems to have fewer J seats compared to the 74B config. 26 in upper deck [vs. 30] 21 in main deck [vs. 25] The number of coach seats are about the same (324 vs. 322). |
The reason for less seats in J class is due to the fact that the new Business Class product has eliminated 4 seats from main deck and 4 seats from upper deck due to the introduction of the new product featuring stretch-flat sleeper seats with a seat pitch of 60 inches.
You have also indicated that their is an increase of 2 more Y class seats and this is due reconfiguration of the cabin. The new 74Y includes the relocation of the toilets from behind row 52 (both sides of the cabin) on 74B to centre rows behind seat number 38 or at the 3rd door (over wing) emergency exit. Therefore, CX has removed the centre seat numbers 43 DEFG (removal of 4 seats) and installed toilets there and adding new row 53 ABC and 53 HJK where the previous toilets were located. Thereby, by doing this, you get 6 additional seats. With this simple calculations, you can see that adding 6 seats and subtracting 4 seats gives you 2 additional seats for 74Y. If you need further analysis of the reconfiguration, please let us know via flyertalk post. |
Well, thanks for the breakdown.
I just wanted to confirm that CX has updated its website with the 74Y config, which means it may be possible to determine whether a specific route will be flow with the new J via the web site. |
You can be pretty sure that they will use
them ( so far only 2 747s with new J seats) to LHR and later on , this year , to SFO , to compete with the other best products from BA and SQ . Another long year and a half to go , before they will completely overhaul their whole long haul fleet ( per their infos ) |
74Y is not a passenger aircraft - it's a freighter, B747-400F
|
74Y is a pax aircraft, according to CX's website, 74Y has the following configuration:
No. of Aircraft in Fleet: 2 Crew: 2(Short Haul)/4(Long Haul) Seating: First Class 12 Business Class (Upper Deck) 26 Business Class (Main Deck) 21 Economy Class 324 Total 383 |
now that is strange! in engineering the
747-400 freighters are designated 74Y (for CX, BA, SQ jsut to name a few). |
