The Wing
Just got back from LHR-HKG-AKL-HKG-LHR in 6 days, all on Cathay. 747 in F between LHR-HKG and A340-300 in J between HKG-AKL. No new Biz class on that route!
I wasn't THAt impressed with the Wing, but I think part of that was because I didn't find the cabanas till i got back to London and read about them in response to a post of mine over on the 'HK Airport' board! Certainly, no staff in the Wing were about to tell me, though I did take a shower. Compared to other lounges, the Wing is confusing and signage is poor. If you are a 1st-time visitor, I suggest you ask, ask, ask or print out a few relevant pages from this board to have with you, in case you are too tired to remember!! |
That's the whole point of THE WING. Descretion!
If we had signage, arrows, and maps. It wouldn't be the lounge would it? That's the joy of discovering what a perfect product CX has. And no body would want to feel like a newbie tourist and be out of place in a First Class lounge like THE WING. |
with respect, GETTING to the lounge was fine; it was gust that once I was there.. i thought the signage was light, there was no sign of life behind the bar, it wasn't clear how to get some food / snack if you were sitting out by the big chairs, i heard people keep asking 'where are the papers / mags'.. i LOVE obscurity, but there is a time and a place - probably NOT when I've just got off a 12-hour flight!

The whole point of the Wing is that it is not supposed to feel like the typical airport lounge; a sitting area, maybe a TV area, a bar and smoking area. Who wants signs? It feels more lie a private club. Luxurious but low key. Having said that, I was also a bit confused on my first visit but wait until you go a second time.

Have you considered, "Excuse me, this is my first time, and I've heard wonderful things about the Wing. Can you please give me a quick tour?"
I'm sure that almost any CX staff in The Wing would have been delighted to show off their little feifdom for you. They are very proud of it. This approach works well in most situations. Even when you're flying FC or Biz on a new airline, it's a good idea to let the people know that, and ask if there's anything special you should know about, look out for, or take advantage of. In my experience, 99% of the time the staff is delighted to have the opportunity to show off for an appreciative audience. This same principal works when you're going to a new health club, eating at a new restaurant, staying at a new hotel, and so on. You'd be astounded at how many great things are out there that most people miss because they don't simply ask... |
