double miles to US until June 30th

For HK residents, who issue their tickets in HK and fly to US destination, LAX, SFO, or JFK (open jaw permitted), and complete their travel by June 30th, 2001 will earn double asia miles! This offer was posted on HK regional web-page. What surprises me is the length of this promotion. Commences on June 7th, and ends 23 days later. Pretty quick.

There is another offer which is attractive. You can fly to London, and by adding just HK$100 (US$13) you can visit other European city served by CX or OW partners. Details to be found on HK CX webpage.

it seems they are trying to match the extended double miles offer from UA...

at first CX is giving more-than-double miles for roundtrip travel to LAX, SFO, YVR, YYZ, and JFK from Mar 1 to May 31 (35,000 total including base miles for Y, 50,000 total including base and class-of-service for J/F, regardless of routes)...and UA was having a similar double-mile promotion during the same period for roundtrip travel to LAX, SFO, YVR, YYZ, NYC (JFK/EWR/LGA/HPN), and ORD...

now UA is kind of "secretly" (I haven't seen it advertised anyway even on UA's HK website, except I heard from my agent and confirmed with UA in HKG) extending its double mile promotion until the end of June, but now only for JFK (some agents said JFK, some still said JFK/EWR/LGA/HPN)...now CX is doing it for also selected ports only compared to the original promotion...and also doing it "secretly"...is it advertised in any newspaper or whatever ?? at least I checked asiamiles.com everyday and it is still not there (but, the Diners double-mile promo has been running for more than a month and it just showed up on asiamiles.com these couple of days)...

tedhl, good insight and analysis. I would agree with your view point, but I was actually never aware of UA promotion. (of course, it's supposed to be secret http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif) It explains why CX is providing such a short-notice on the web, and as far as I know, it's not advertised anywhere to the public. By the time people realize, the promotion is over!

Can somebody tell me the point of having a "secret promotion"? Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

nw had a hk only promotion that was even bigger. fly one biz class roundtrip and earn 32K bonus, fly 5 and earn 650K. absurd amounts of free miles, but you do what you have to compete when you are getting killed by the competition with either better service or non-stop routes!!!

bp, usually "secret promotions" are "targeted promotions". They are meant to be visible to the targeted niche but "secret" for others. Most businesses will offer incentives only to explicit recipients of offers and it is only in some businesses that offers are extended to others not on the target list that "quote" the original offer.

As a semi-marketing type I have no problem with "secret" promotions http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif As an FTer I do prefer that knowledge of the secrets let me into the hallowed chambers!
