Is it wise to RON in HKG?
I'm on a RTW DOWE3 trip, trying to maximize tier points for BA. Am flying the "red eye" from LAX-HKG (ETA HKG 0630), then HKG-TPE-HKG (leaving 07:50) then HKG-DXB-BAH (leaving HKG 16:00). As presently scheduled, it is virtually continuous - thus I'll be flying for about 26+ hours. I'm trying to decide if I should take the earlier CX flight from LAX and arriving at about 21:00 then spending the night in HKG to leave at 07:50 to TPE the following morning. That way I'd get some sleep and a shower, etc. and break up the trip. But, I'd have to claim luggage and also would have to get into HKG to a hotel (Hyatt?). Need advice on the best approach here - presume it would be a short 30+ minute trip in to HKG and back, so I could get to a hotel about 22:30 latest and leave the hotel about 05:30 or so to go back to airport. Would this be enough time to get luggage at left luggage and check it in for the HKG-TPE-HKG-DXB-BAH flight? Or I could leave it at left luggage until just before the HKG-DXB-BAH flight, then check it for that. What's the best approach? Are there other alternatives I haven't thought of? Sure appreciate your advice on this one.

I don't think they would even let you check your luggage from LAX to Bahrain. You will probably get it to Taipei, then through to BAH. As far as length, 26 hours is close enough to the distance from London to Sydney. I thought these flights would be hell, but they actually were not as bad as I expected. The only difference is that there was one connection (bkk), and you are looking at 4. Personally, I would just suffer my way through it. If you do decide to stop in HKG, though, check out The Wing. Pretty neat place.
Hyatt Hong Kong. Yikes. I can't even imagine how expensive that would be. Probably more than I make in a week. |
My 2c worth -
Take the flight that gets in at night in HKG. Take your luggage. Check in at the Regal Airport Hotel - forgo points for convenience! Otherwise, you can take the train to HKG to Kowloon Hyatt Regency. Rate is around HK$1400 a night - that's about US$180 average. Take your luggage and leave at checked luggage. It's very tedious to do a go around involving Taipei. Check-in for HKG-TPE-HKG. Leave enough time to return to HKG, go thru immigration and collect your left luggage and then check in again for your Middle East flights. |
Guy Betsy,
That checked luggage place is a rip. I left 2-3 bags there last month for a couple of days and ended up paying something like US$50! Plus, it takes a couple of minutes to fill out their check-in form. Provided you can get everything loaded onto one luggage cart, you can push it all the way into the lobby of the Regal, where a bellman will collect it and bring it to your room. Even after allowing for 2 tips (delivering to/from room), you'll save a little money and a little time. |
