AA specials on CX

Using an AA award, does anyone know of any CX biz class specials right now ex North America to Australia, in addition to the 55000 miles Y special? And, is CX J class to Australia that much better than QF that I should route myself via HKG rather than going JFK-LAX-SYD direct (I don't want to stopover in HKG). The CX award is cheaper than QF, I guess...

If you transfer your address and become a Canadian AA member then the same award will only cost you 37,000 miles which is a good saving. A normal business award to Oz is 100,000 miles which IMO is well worth it especially compared to QF.

BTW, can anyone say for sure how many miles is needed to upgrade a "Y" ticket to biz from North America to Australia via HKG and post the appropriate link? I seem to be having problems finding it on Cathay's webpage.

Using AA miles, 25k presumably each way. Award 25B.

From Canada, it appears to be 15k. http://www.cathay.ca/offers/millennium.asp

Thanks Terenz!! What a bargain!! But would this apply to only full "Y" tickets or also lower fares?

tedhl Feb 3, 2001 7:18 am

If I remember correctly...the 25k Y->J and 40k J->F awards are both roundtrip awards...and now these are 15k and 20k respectively, ex-Canada...

Spider, yes, I think these apply to full-fare Y tickets only...what I am not sure if whether the J->F awards also only apply to full-fare J ??

I think any Y fare (including Y2s) are eligible. The AA site specifies Y, Y2 and YX2. I'd imagine the business class fares have to be J or J2. It;d be nice if one could upgrade from a C or D fare.

If the upgrades are R/T, they are quite good value (actually, tedhl is correct as it's comparable to AA's full-fare upgrades for comprable destinations). I'm just used to looking for upgrades on cheap tickets. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

you don't have to be from canada to get the special 37,500 award. you just have to ravel from there. my roommate is buying a ticket from lga-yyz, and then using the award to go from yyz-australia.
