first class seat selection
 

going to hong kong this month in first with wife wondering which is the better seats. the obvious choice is the center seats however the bulkhead looks very private but may be too far apart, any thoughts?

Go for the center seats - you can always put up the divider http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

The bulkhead seat is too far apart for conversation.

Can't tell where you live but if you fly BA they have a "buddy" seat where two can sit face to face or dinner or conversation. The first row works the best because it is quieter but traveling with your wife, you are best in the first pair of the middle seats.

If you like to look out the window and watch airplanes etc., I suggest you avoid 1A or 1K since there is a slight curvature that sort of makes viewing difficult.

If you don't care about looking out the window, then the centre seats would be fine.

With 1 A and K, you can have a semi-private conversation. With 3 DG you are seated right next to each other. If this is the first time on CX for either of you, either of the choices will work. I like to drop the side of the seat down and conversate with my seat mate in 1 K/A if I know who they are. This is an unusual benefit compared to BA and QF. It really isn't too far.

first is seldomly 'private' due to the good service, except for the bulkhead seats, i.e. row 1. and, 1a/1k is not too far apart that you can have conversation...

I was in 1K two days ago and I didn't think that 1A and 1K were that far apart. I prefer row 1 compared to the center seats because they have sides next to the window where you can put things. In the center seats, there is really no where to put things. If you talk all the time, then I would suggest the center seats. If it is an occasional conversation, then I say row 1 is better. In row 3 or 4 center, you also have the people sitting on the window near you so it is not as private.

thanks for your help,no clear consensus so booked 1a and 1k on outbound and center on return.also thinking about doing a three day trip elsewhere like maybe bejeing or shanghai i'm open to suggestions. this area of the world is truly foreign to me. thanks again.

If you're looking for a not-so-faraway place to spend a few days, consider Chiang Mai (Thailand). It's exotic but not nearly as frenetic as many other Asian cities, it's incredibly welcoming to tourists, and there's lots and lots to see and do.

It does require flying to Bangkok (CX or TG) and then a connecting flight on TG, but the air fares are very reasonable. Once in Chiang Mai, you've got the choice of Thai-style hotels like the Riverview Lodge, excellent Western-style hotels like the Royal Princess (~$60/night), or world-class resorts like the Regent.
