Cheap(er) way to retain expiring Asiamiles

Step 1. Book reward ticket that will use up all your expiring points
Step 2. Cancel & pay $120 penalty

This will only work for ppl who has "a lot of points" expiring.

Current ongoing rate for renewing the points = 2000pt/$40/36mo = 1.39pt/$/mo

I redeemed a flight that costed me 12000pt expiring by 06/17, I cancelled the flight, payed $120, and the points were refunded with updated expiration of 03/18 (9mo renewal):

Rate for renewing the points with this method = 120000pt/$120/9mo = 111.11pt/$/mo.

Still having to pay $120, but much better than the official deal.

Hopefully this can help someone out there with lots of points expiring, and does not have near-future need to use up the points to renew their points cheaper.

This has been discussed here before. Obviously you could have got a somewhat longer extension by booking flights in 05/18 (for miles expiring 06/17) and then not cancelling until just before the flight schedule. That would have got you an extension into 2019.

I have an award ticket booked in Jan 2017 for a flight on 13 Dec 2017. Do I need to cancel before 13 Dec 2017 or can I wait till Jan 2018 to do the cancellation?
Are there any no-show fee charged if the cancellation are done in Jan 2018?

Thanks,

Thanks,
No no-show fee for AM awards, only rebooking/reissue/cancellation fee.

Can cancel Jan 18 (I cancelled a 5 Dec 16 issued ticket yesterday)

I don't really know how to execute this. I have about 200k am expiring circa April next year. What should I do if I don't really want to spend them yet?

Perhaps 200000 miles is worth paying a fee to retain them?

This is why I love the Amex MR program. You only transfer the miles when you need them (well I mess you fly that much then we'll done!)

Make bookings before April. Still plenty of time and you can book 360 days out (CX).
