Now isn't this clever......and clearly someone realizes the challenge with this luggage can have an upside.

Anyone who is worried about rimowa luggage getting banged up, really should not be buying rimowa. I mean, it's like the old saying, if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it.

Might be a combination of factors but definitely the claims are high; we have had relatives claim CX and other airlines for holes and dings!!! Yes - Rimowa!. It's more of a trend - "status" symbol nowadays with Rimowa riding the wave of consumerism and commercialism in Asia and jacking up their prices in this part of the world. We also noticed prices have gone slightly up in Germany, as well. Glad our 10 year old Samsonite sets are still holding up well.

Well, we all know many people are obsessed with "brands", not all of which are great quality, despite the fame.

After my Samsonite canvas material bags became too heavy for airlines and their weight-management systems , about 4 years ago, I bought a set from Heys - carry on and full-size (not the giant ones I see on the Airport Express )
I also have one that is slightly smaller and not hard shell for those pesky U.S. carriers and some OW's who have smaller size and weight restrictions.

They have many newer models now so I may update the carry on.

They've both been checked and I like the "worn" look on them.

How bad are the dings/scratches that people are claming reimbursement from the airlines for, and how much are people getting?

I know for a fact that a number of these claims (especially holes) result from damages that were intentionally produced by people. It is quite common e.g. amongst airline crews to poke holes into the suitcase with screwdrivers to get a brand-new replacement instead of a repair.

Personally, I'd never even think about claiming dings and scratches on my bags. The Salsa series I have been using for roughly 4 years now has their third set of wheels as of today and no significant damages apart from that. I consider them (not the Salsa Air series though) virtually indestructable, unless some serious force is applied. Handles, wheels and such can be replaces without problems.

Ausriver- was it a pic that you clicked..and if so did the SCMP 'journalist' request permission to re-use that?

Well they certainly didn't request any permission to use the photo I took at SYD and I guess they don't even know this was a photo at an Australian airport, not HKIA.

Nope. Not me. So get your assertions straight. I never handle photos.

My thinking is the photo desk (and I can ask them tomorrow) where on Facebook they sourced it from.

It is unfortunate that whomever saw the original photo and recirculated it on Facebook has caused some issues.

In which case I apologize, unequivocally so, for casting a 'slur'.

I have memories of the SCMP (HK'ers may disagree) being a 'higher' news organization than most regional peers ..compared to what I'd seen till moving to HKG years' back, but can vouch for the standards- both on reporting and the language- slipping sharply in the past few. That dismay came out wrongly in this case, for which I apologise.
