First Class upgrade on segments without first class

Just wondering if i'm able to upgrade from business to first CLASS on a MEL-JFK flight where the MEL-HKG sector (stopover) does not have first class (a330)?

Is there some way to request an upgrade only for the HKG-JFK segment or am i just missing something?

If AM, sure, it's segment by segment (or a return like HKG-JFK-HKG)

You could upgrade HKG-JFK, you will not miss anything.
