Upgrade after Takeoff?
Just curious if anyone has had this experience? It's happened to me just the once - from Paris to HKG, PE to BIZ. Was so grateful - as the gentleman next to me had taken his shoes off and had them virtually on my lap! Steward saw it and once at cruising alt a very diplomatic "sir, would you mind having your dinner in another seat... and please bring your bag."
And hello - new joiner, 4th year DM |
Yes, once, as a DM. From Y to F on SIN to HKG.
There was another DM near me who was doing a DYKWIA act about a seat that didn't recline and demanding a better one, and the ISM decided that she had had enough of his whinging, so she invited me to take a new seat (J was full, so it was in F) and told the DYKWIA that he had a new seat, which was my old Y seat. I enjoyed the Krug :D |
Yes, as DM, Y to J on midnight flight from HKG to ICN.
|
Nope.
After sitting down, I'm pretty much reserved that I will be sitting in that seat for the rest of the flight. |
Once, 3-4 years ago. I was upgraded HND-HKG from J to F once I was seated onboard. I had settled into my seat, i specifically remember it was either 25A or 26A (last rows in J class). Cash ticket. Ground staff came on board about 5 minutes after I boarded, told me I "had" to move to 2A. I did not object!

Happened to me once about 5 or 6 years ago, LAX to HKG...was seated in 59A and after I got settled, ISM said there's been a mistake and I was led to a J seat. I think it might have been my anniversary month and it was one of the very few times I got upgraded from LAX.

Not a real upgrade, but been moved up a bit (well, a long bit at times), before landing.
A very high percentage of these were on CX636 when I was commuting from SIN weekly-the flight was usually delayed 10-20 mins, making for a touch n go with the last airport express to town. The longest bit was midway through the flight, when the meal service had just finished(the service tended to be quicker on that flight, given schedule)..seat change quickly followed by a check if I needed a drink. |

Yes, J to F on a Haneda flight. The ISM recognised me from an previous flight and reseated me in F.
|
Twice. Once on UA from Y to J when the obnoxious pax behind me put their knees up to prevent me from reclining, and claimed he has no leg space and wasn't doing it on purpose. The FA immediately saw through the BS and moved me to J.
Another time on CX, but just from Y to Y+ (definitely not complaining though), after I had given the FA's some chocolates on a HKG - SFO flight right after Christmas. |
Not really an upgrade per se, a few years ago on LAX-HKG from Y to J after the second J meal was served. My parents were in J and the ISM offered to my parents to move me up so that we can disembark together.
|
Yes recently from LAX to HK. 1st officer didn't show up so last minute re route to Seoul to change the crew (+3 hours). Was sitting in J and talking to the crew about the delay when they offered me an F seat to make the trip over more enjoyable.

Never, but moved up from row 71 surrounded by tour groups to row 48 with an empty seat next to me...

Once with my IFE system was down after several reboots, but I guess that's normal even if someone has no status.
