Request Upgrade v. Waitlist
 
I have a business trip that I have to make and the dates aren't very flexible, +/- a day. It will probably be LAX > HKG > CAN. I plan on booking a premium economy award ticket to make sure I get on the flight. Which way would be the best to get to business:

Request an upgrade to my W ticket?
Wait list for a different award business ticket?

I realize there will be a fee if I end up cancelling my W ticket.

Normal logic is upgrade over waitlist but not always

You can't upgrade award ticket... not sure if that's a typo.

As for buying, you don't need W, you can book R. Cancellation penalty is same and both upgradeable.
