Children in J
 

I've heard all the arguments against children in business class so I don't need this to turn into that thread.

I'm flying with a 13 month old from Australia to Europe and I'm wondering if there is enough room in the CX seat to do it without buying the extra seat for the baby.

I've never flown CX but I've done it with SQ and had more than enough space for the both of us.

All opinions appreciated.

No. The SQ long haul J seat is very square and adults sleep diagonally, which leaves two triangular zones of flat space for a baby. The CX seat is in herringbone format with a long seat and side space configured as storage rather than bed space.

I disagree and say yes. We recently flew AA which has the same J seat LHR-LAX-LHR, out in F and back in J. My wife had our baby and thought the J seat was better than the F seat with the baby.

A car seat cannot be used in the CX J seat, they have a special child seat that can be attached to the J seat, but the seat cannot be reclined when this is installed. Also due to the layout it's difficult to see / assist the child if they are in their own seat.

I second the "yes" comment. Assuming your 13 month old isn't a giant, it should be perfectly fine to share a seat. Buying a separate seat will be even more difficult unless your child is the type that listens to every instruction from the parents. I think the only challenge is during meal times (for you) but that can be worked around. Don't expect to be super comfortable since your child's comfort will take priority but it is much better than Y!
