I was on the delayed CX781 last week coming from SFO and Cathay gave me a hotel voucher with early checkin at the Regal hotel, along with all you-can-eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
What I did was to call the reservation number before the SFO-HK flight and told them that my flight would be delayed till the next day. They said no problem and I got the hotel voucher when I checked in. |

The other thing is, my wife lives 25 miles from Gunung Ruang which is apparently the cause of the issues and she reliably informs me that that there has been no activity for the past few days . Not that I'm going to argue with the experts :D. As said, I hope the timings revert back but we shall have to see what happens nearer the time. I will do the same as Wudang and proactively contact CX if the schedules are the revised ones nearer and covering my travel date. As much as I love Hong Kong and its attractive night life, I fear a 20hr layover is just asking for trouble :D:D:D. And the wife wouldn't be too happy at me pouring myself off the plane :p:p Safe & Happy Travels S |

S On Feb 1, Mount Bromo actually increased its activity: http://nasional.news.viva.co.id/news...nggi-200-meter Hopefully it will be over by the time you travel. Best, |
The problem with the normal schedule isn't so much flying into an ash cloud at night, it is that the aircraft is parked overnight for about 12-13 hours. A change of wind, and the aircraft could be covered in ash, putting it out of service for some time. Other international airlines have "turnarounds", which is what the "volcano" schedule is.

Best, Went up to Bromo not long after the last big eruption and it was still rumbling away. A bit scary and surreal. Amazing seeing the size of the rocks that the eruption had spewed out and the places where they had landed and the landscape covered in ash. Here's hoping it all calms down. Safe & Happy Travels S |

What about the domestic airlines? They just don't have choice if SUB is their base?

I asked a friend who is a CX FA regarding the delay. She told me that she had to stay in SUB till next day's flight.

Well, just had a notification on MyFlights App that my booking had changed. Checked and the flight has been re-timed to depart at 02:10hrs with arrival in to SUB at 05:55hrs.
Checked MMB and also noticed that travel alerts show that the re-timing has now extended till 25th March 2016. Tried to call CX UK to see what my options were but due to a technical difficulty they cannot receive calls......... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Safe & Happy Travels S |
Well, a bit better than 0315...

Well, got the e-mail today that online check in was open for my flights. Tried on the app but was notified that this function cannot be done. Went on the website and put in my PNR and other details and got a message back to contact the reservations centre as there was an issue with my e-ticket number.
Near panic, the UK contact centre is closed on a Sunday so called the HK number. Was answered in 7 minutes and was on the line for a further 6 finding out what the problem was. Apparently because the SUB (CX781) was re-scheduled, I cannot do OLCI and have to do check-in at AMS on Tuesday. No problems with my booking so hopefully all will be okay  Safe & Happy Travels S |
Update
Checked in for my flights at AMS this morning and was referred to the ticket desk to collect a hotel voucher ^^. Putting me up in the Regal Airport Hotel.
