I was the passive-agressive schmuck in the second row

I was flying an all coach Dragon Air flight today, seated one row behind the bulkhead. I had a small bag to put under the seat, when I noticed the person in the bulkhead seat in front of me had put her bag beneath her own seat. I pushed her bag with my feet forward, so it was now on the floor in front of her legs.

She turned around and nicely explained that because she had no seat in front of her, she had to put it below her own seat. (She was very sweet about it. But it didn't fly with me -pun intended). Mind you, I didn't need that much space. But I was standing on ceremony, as she should hav asked first.

My travel companion told me I was being unreasonable.

I counted to ten and calmed myself.

I then realized I had a nice built in foot rest via her bag.

Not my classiest moment.

What happened to the overhead space - all taken?

Whodunit68 Dec 31, 2015 4:28 am

It certainly would annoy me. It's easy for me to sit here and tell you that I would remind them about the overhead and the announcements specifically say under the seat in front of you. The announcements generally even talk about being in the first row of each cabin using the overhead. The final recourse of course is a flight attendant but that's usually reserved for a more serious situation, like when I lady called the flight attendant on me for using electronic devices when they were allowed to be used. I absolutely loved it when the flight attendant told her she was wrong. In this situation, however, a flight attendant can be called and politely asked if there is room in the overhead for the bag for the person in front of you… You can almost appear to be a good guy. :)

I had a similar situation about a year ago on one flight during which the guy in front of me was reading through a whole stack of newspapers, and for each section he finished, he would stuff it underneath his seat. I used my feet to push the newspapers back out, but he did not get the hint, so I finally asked a flight attendant to deal with this issue.

Aren't flight attendants there specifically to help you deal with situations that you don't want to have to deal with yourself?

Well, actually they are there for our safety first but they do serve this purpose, absolutely. In this case, it could be the safety of the person in front :).

This happened to me recently - it was a jacket. I summoned a flight attendant and informed her that it must have been left behind. Avoided confrontation while remaining 100% passive aggressive.

Not in Asia they don't.

I had a very similar scenario occur on PG a few years back. In my case the FA told the woman to place her bag under the seat and I spoke up quickly and assertively that the space was mine and she needed to place her bag in the overhead compartment. I'm a big guy and will only accept that space being restricted if there is seat gear or my bag causing it. And i try my best to avoid seat gear being the cause.

Unreasonable would have been if you had taken her bag and stuffed it in some random overhead bin far away.

What would this achieve? Crew will swing by, ask whose bag is it, the person in front says it's mine, crew moves on...
