turn around flights using JNB
Given that there is a bit more than 5 hours between CX arrival in JNB and the departure back to HKG, I would think that an immediate turn in JNB would be relatively simple.
OTOH, CX might not like nested tickets (though two one ways aren't all that much more expensive in getting to and from JNB) given the relatively low prices exJNB. Anyone done an recent and immediate turn at JNB on CX while wandering? Fred |

But why'd you turn around- So much to do in Africa!

For whatever reasons you want to do a turn-around in JNB. Time wise it is more than possible as its an early morning arrival with a midday departure.
However, I am not sure if you could "transit" from the same destination... you might need to enter S.A and then go back through departures. There is plenty of time for that. CX wouldn't be the issue. It would be whether or not S.A. immigration would be ok for it, and whether you would need a visa or not to enter S.A. for your turnaround. I am not sure what passport you hold? |
wandering_fred how are you repositioning to JNB? :D

Did it last year on the last days of the 747. Exited and re-entered immigration same day within hours. Immigration officer was puzzled, but told him/her I had emergency and needed to head back to HK asap.
Was on 2 separate tickets, but it didn't seem to matter to CX or customs.

Australian passport holders can enter for up to 90 days with out a visa. I plan on spending a couple of days on the return leg. I spent 10 days in SA in 1983 so I suspect it has changed a bit since then :):D Happy wandering Fred |

The Fx makes things particularly compelling right now.

Been through JNB quite a few times these past few years.
Don't go through transit immigration - you'll get stuck there in a boring waiting room until the CX check in opens 2 hours before departure. OTOH it'll probably be easier explaining to the immigration officers there that you are connecting to HKG - they dont seem to really care where you are arriving from. Never had to produce an itinerary either - just answer verbally. |
Immigration at JNB can be a bit of a Zoo in the morning hours when most flights arrive. But 5 hours are plenty to go thru immigration and back in.
Try to spend a day there. Take the train from the airport (frequent, takes around 30 min) to Sandton (last stop). Many hotels very close to the train station, large shopping mall etc. Lots of things to see/do. That area is safe. |
