Is MPC Silver worth it?
dont know if this is allow, if.not please delete this thread, thank you mods
right now there is a huge gap in benefit between silver and gold status namely the guarantee economy v seats 3 days in advance which will be gone by next April. So there is no difference in getting gold in 2015 except for the unpublish benefit of higher chance of upgrades Anyway i sign up for 2 programs that give out instant silver status and might come useful for ppl who plans to fly cx but wont archieve silver or for whatever reason will pay usd 100 to renew their green status membership card or want a jump start. I wont give out refferal codes so i receive nothings from either program. Asmallworld could give u MPC Silver and other benefits (havsmt use any yet and will not renew) for USD110, ONLY if u are a residence of USA. Obviously i am not and couldnt get Silver from them. Founderscard could also give you Silver and other benefit (AA PLT not EXP challenge for free which i didnt join) for USD 395. i got my status from them with a non us residence ( i am base in hk, cx's home turf) So both program requires refferals, if you guys are interested PLEASE DO YOUR OWN DUE DILIGENCE AND RESEARCH before signing up and dont get distract from the discount in membership they offer. There are other members in flyertalk that helps give out refferal just look them up. So at the end my question is if MPC Silver worth USD 395? |
I also got an invitation for FoundersCard for $395. I didn't apply, but perhaps I should.
If MPC SL the only reason for you to join, you can get your answer in your own post - If you are a US resident, you can get MPC SL from ASmallWorld for US110 membership including other benefits. So I suppose MPC SL is worth no more than US$110... |
MPC Silver is only worth it if you plan to fly CX in Y or Y+ and think the lounge access is worth it.
|
And it's CX lounges alone, so you can't use partner lounges for better food. $110 is a lot of dandan noodles...
|
It is not just lounge access. My daughters are only GR (2000 short of SL :(), but lounge access is not a problem. They usually go to the Plaza Premium lounge anyway when they wait for flights in HKG.
It is also for seat assignments, check-in line, waitlisting, etc. |
I think it's not worth it if you can't maintain SL by flying. If you will attain SL but want to start enjoying the benefits asap (instead of waiting many months) then I suppose the $395 is okay.
The question for me is whether GO would be worth it or not. I will have enough travel to qualify for GO NEXT membership year but it seems that there's not much difference to SL anyway (seat gautanteed only in Y), I might as well bank my miles elsewhere or just fly on other carriers instead. What do you guys think? |

And if you are traveling solo, then there is lounge access, check-in counters, extra baggage allowance and the occasional op-up (although that never happened when I was SL). |

One more data point - this is related to the privilege of having lounge access.
About 6-7 years ago, when we were returning on AA from MCO to SFO via MIA, the incoming equipment to MCO was delayed by three hours. By the time we arrived at MIA, our connecting flights already departed. As you may expect, most passengers were transiting in MIA, and they already missed the last flight for the night. AA asked passengers to get to a counter for arrangements. I went there. It was like a zoo. I immediately went to the nearest Admirals Club (the FS Lounge in MIA was closed). Unlike the other AA passengers, I can access the AC with my CX status. The AA agent was very helpful, made all arrangements for us (including the checked baggage), got us four first row seats for the flight the next morning, got us the hotel and meal vouchers. If I didn't have lounge access, we would spend an hour or two at the AA counter waiting for whatever they can do for us. During an IRROP, a MPC SL can get back to a CX lounge for help, whereas those without status will be SOL. I also encountered situations in HKG where my flights were delayed and canceled, and I got the situation taken care of at the lounge. |

I think if OP doesn't fly enough and only flies in Y, 395USD per year is not a small amount to pay. I think your very detailed post must be very helpful to OP decision making though!
For the missed MCO-MIA-SFO flight, theoretically only I and one guest could enter the AC. However, we were not really entering. I was at the receptionist desk only and because I could access the lounge, she helped me and my family. She was indeed very nice to allow my kids to get in for water. She also got us four dental sets, not just two for me and my guest. |
Any chance someone could PM me an invite to ASW? Been looking into it for a while but never found a way to get in. Cheers
|
In addition to the already mentioned perks: Just went through a short spell of Green and was moved around in Y for no apparent reason (no equipment changes, no bassinet seats) on 3 out of 4 flights at the counter. This has not happened once in 5+ years and 100+ flights as Silver or Gold. Not sure this is statistically significant but it sure was enough for me to try and never drop to Green again. 110 bucks for silver? Any day.

Priority tags is a benefit I value a lot. While it's true that there are so many bags tagged priority nowadays, being able to guarantee that your bags will be among the first half to come out still makes a difference. Your luggage runs the risk of being one of the last few to shoot out of the carousel if it's tagged without priority...
In short, lounge access and priority tags are the biggest perks of SL over GR. The rest are rather trivial IMO. |

i fly cx y and redeem cx pey, i book a rtw so the silver status could get me qualify to gold instead of 2 year silver status
The lounge in hkg is great and the extra legroom seat is a big plus especially for 12+ hrs flights My reasoning back then was MPC 110, AA PLT Challenge 200 and other benefits 85. That was before i know AA gives out free EXP challenges. I must agree 395 is expensive, and I dont want anyone to be like me. Join both program just to get silver and ends up paying 505. But so far 2 biz upgrad in short haul and 1 pey upgrade for long haul so i guess it has been working in my favor so far... |

AA PLT = CX Gold not CX SL so I think you meant to ask whether MPC SL worth USD 110 (consistent with the title of this thread)? Everyone has difference experience but in general I think the answer is NO.
So in essence one is paying USD 110 for CX lounge access + CX seat assignment for the one (or maybe two) time flying CX. As percysmith mentioned above that's a lot of dandan mian ... |
From my understanding, FoundersCard gives the opportunity to be 'gifted' MPC Silver, not just the AA PLT challenge. So you would actually get both for USD 395 and I believe it's available to everyone through FoundersCard, not just US residents.

I don't think it's worth it for USD 110 so definitely not for USD 395 though presumably this founderscard has benefits (other than just free CX SL and free AA PLT challenge) that may make it, as a package, worthwhile. |

In short, lounge access and priority tags are the biggest perks of SL over GR. The rest are rather trivial IMO. I 2nd to that.... Priority tags is my 1st, I have had experience waiting for a luggage for an hour. After a flight, especially after a long flight, the only thing I think off is get out of the airport. With the priority tags, my wait for luggage is less than 10 mins. I can be out of airport waiting for a ride within 30 mins(including immigration) counting from the aircraft opens it's door when I'm SFO, HKG, TPE, KHH, PEK & PVG. When in SIN or KUL, the luggage will be waiting for me after I passed immigration. My 2nd will be contacting MPC hot-line. I have no issue calling them, and never have to wait for more than 5 mins although there's a attitude difference when speaking with HK staff & Mainland staff. I really do feel that mainland staff tends to 'go by the book' where others 'go the extra miles'. 3rd will be lounge access. Go to have, especially when there's a flight delay and I can rest in a lounge near my gate |
Founders card offered Sign up for platinum Challenge for free. It was offered for very short periods this year, twice. However, AA Challenges for status is dead now, last day to sign up was Sept 23, 2015, until new format resurfaces, if any.

Ah, I misunderstood what OP is saying. So CX SL is a freebie/automatic with this founderscard and on top of that one can also signup for AA PLT for free? Got it.

I am a Gold MPC but with the coming changes I will barely make Silver going forward. Does anyone know if either a smallworld or founderscard will still give Silver MPC status after the changes to the programme go into effect in April 2016?
Assuming yes to the foregoing, next question please. Would anyone know whether when starting as Silver I will be able to earn my way towards Gold, effectively buying myself a head start? To date my long haul travels on PEY as Gold would get me J upgrades 50% of the time. If I had the chance to improve the likelihood of my keeping Gold for a $110 fee and the upgrades (I am a US resident) I would so so. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

Founderscard still offer CX Silver but at the higher membership price. Also they no longer challenge to AA and the 10% discount on AA flights. IMO you should not apply until you drop back to green, no point in paying earlier when you dont need to use the benefit. No one would know when CX decide to terminate the partnership Also since the guarantee seats for Y/PEY/J is in the most expensive fare after the changes IMO there are less chance of op-up due to less chance of overbooking from DM/Gold using last minute seat guarantee. You should renew your GOLD ASAP or as close to April 2016 as possible again IMO |

As a Silver, I've had a good strike rate for upgrades flying from outports this year. 100% from my home city of Perth, and 50% of the time from the other outports. Never had one out of HKG. Though I've just had the good luck of booking on flights that then ended up being overbooked (and one on my birthday). I'm expecting that percentage to drop after New Year. |
Sorry for reviving old thread.
I have come across these Founders Card and ASmallWorld these few days for their SL benefits. It seems to me both of their SL upgrade is one shot (even though u can have multiple years with ASW or FC) and you need to requalify for silver for adequate club point. Nevertheless it is sort of valuable to low end travellers like me - who rely 80% of flights on miles. CX Lounge access and baggage allowance would also be very attractive as well. For FC, I can see multiple referral code popping up on the Interweb (I bet members do get referral bonus) for US$295+95 per year or $295+295 for 2 years; For ASW - it is $110 but many people complained about involuntary renewals. They need to get invited in the game as well. Given the above, I still want to hop on ASW wagon to give SL a try. If anyone is involved with ASW, please hook me up. |

I'm looking at the value of SL for each Y flight is about US$100 for show-medium haul and $150 for long haul. Be able to select exit row seat advance, got priority check in, extra luggage, no need to worry about cabin luggage size, lounge visits.
So for anyone who's taking less than 2 return trips with CX a year, it could be a waste of money unless you do want the extra luggage which could cost more than $395 |

Ok, I was told that the CX SL upgrade perk is a once-in-a-lifetime perk.
Even if you have multiple years of FC/ASW membership, you can only upgrade to SL thru them once and only once. When you mention once and only once I assume its per account? Not per program? |

No but if you try and open an AM account with same name and DOB as existing member asiamiles.com will stop you http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...p?id=18044&p=8 #76.
Say my name is Chan Tai Man on my HK passport and Chan Tai Man John on my UK passport, would that not be possible since the name/passport/address/email etc is different and only the birthday is the same? Even if its possible it will only work once assuming you have 2 passports, not many people have 3+ passports with different (combination) name every time |
jkuok if you follow the hongkongcard.com post AM is going after duplicate account holders.
Their objective is to obtain multiple redemption lists for sale of awards, to which AM is applying the misuse T&C on. I don't think they'll take a less dim view on someone opening duplicate accounts to obtain two non-earned SLs. |

jkuok: If you use one account or another, without any attempt to earn any advantage, AM may simply offer to merge the accounts on discovery of their existence (think it's been said somewhere further down the Hongkongcard thread they will merge)

By the way, looks like ASW removed MP Silver from the list of benefits. And Founders Card makes no sense, given its insane price. |
