Limits on checked baggage?
I tried looking at the site, but didn't find the answer. I'm moving, so I'm checking in quite a few bags. Called MPO, they don't have a clue. Kept just repeating off the website. I rarely check more than one bag and it's almost never over 23 kg, however:
Flying PVG-xHKG-SFO ~ 1) Is the weight limit of each additional bag (over my allowance), the same of the limit for my ticketing class? (Since I'm flying in J, my each additional piece can be 32 kg?) 2) What's the maximum number of bags I can check? Right now I'm looking at five checked baggage, but it may grow to six or seven… |
I think the weight of each bag is really up to the discretion of the check in agent. I once had a bag over the limit but my two other bags were under. the agent threatened to charge me for being overweight but went to talk to her supervisor and in the end let it go. I think with 6-7 bags you may be pushing it. you may want to have 3-4 checked bags and maybe 2 carry ons?

Since you're flying J and a DM, you are allowed 3 pieces at 32 kg each. There's no limit to the amount of bags you check....just as long as it doesn't go over 32 kg and you'll pay for the overage. If you go over by a couple kg, they NORMALLY let it slide. Depends on the agent.

Yes. Many years ago, I did AA/JL and they only allowed 32 kg for the first three (AA being the main carrierr...their rules apply). Everything else had to be 23kg. Maximum 10 bags. They were also strict about not going over 32/23 kg. That's when I decided to 86 them.

Back in the days when there's not a lot of extra baggage fees? I can't imagine the charges 14 bags would incur today....
If you're traveling regionally on CX or anywhere not North America, you're only allowed 50kg in jcl, including the DM allowance. I've gone over by 3 kg and they generally won't charge. If you hit 5 kg or above, that's when they might charge. |

There was no leniency with AA. You paid whatever you were over. UA & QR currently charge US$ 200 per piece.

Thanks for all good info.
I should point out I am not concerned about paying for the extra pieces mainly due to the fact it will cost me way more to replace all the things I would need to toss than pay the $150 required. I have packed five bags all to the gills are almost 32 kg a piece. These five are not possible as carry ons being they're all too large for the cabin. I know some airlines do limit the number of checked baggage hence my concern. I am looking at a sixth piece right now, I may be able to fit the rest of my stuff into that and it could be carryon. Also cleared an upgrade to F, so perhaps they'll be more generous. |
