Go-show and HKG?

I'm flying MAA-SFO via HKG, but ended up with a 15+ hour layover at HKG (last minute ticket). There's a HKG-SFO flight 4.xx hours after I land in HKG.

I'm flying CX (Cathay). One agent advised me I could do a "go-show" and try to get on that earlier flight. Another agent pointed out I'd have to check my baggage through to SFO, so I won't be eligible for the go-show.

Any ways to get around this? Can I check my bag to HKG only?

Thanks in advance!

Note: it was possible to check in the bag to HKG, and attempt a go-show from there.

Perhaps that is some weird Cathay speak for asking to fly standby on the earlier flight? And voluntary international standby is usually refused if the passenger has checked bags.

Even if you check your bags all the way to SFO (with the 15hours+ layover flight), CX can still (relatively) easily to retrieve your bags and send them to the earlier flight.

The safer way is, as suggested by RemoteControl, check your bags to HKG, pick them up, clear immigration and head to the standby check-in counter. Standby is possible subject to availability, ticket rule is not decisive (even if your ticket is a completely no change allowed ticket, you *may* still be able to get on the earlier flight)

agree with LchChester above. you MIGHT be required to pay change fee however (never charged me at HKIA however. only LHR and HK Station.

Go-show and HKG?

TravelerMSY- I've seen the phrase 'go-show' used in a few airlines' fare rules, though not in CX's. Guess just be an earlier era phrase for standby.

The above advise is sound- CX does try to fill up seats with standby's, though it's a bit different from the U.S. System - done at a specific check in counter at ~T-60 rather than the gate...and they don't have an issue accepting check in bags. The only time I was unsuccessful standing by exHKG was when I'd checked my bags for an earlier flight and reached the airport at T-70 odd ...they tried to, but couldn't locate my bags in time for the earlier flight.
