Indeed, quite drastic changes in BAEC announced today:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...b-changes.html

Personally (J/F flyer), I am apparently not overly affected by these changes, but discount Y flyers are:
"Our lowest priced tickets in Euro Traveller and World Traveller will award a minimum Avios of 25% per mile flown instead of 100%. In Club World/Club Europe and our First cabins the Avios you earn will either remain the same as it is now or increase up to 300% per mile flown depending on the cabin and type of ticket."
"The lowest priced World Traveller and Euro Traveller seats will now collect 25% of Tier Points rather than 50%. "

Spending rates are also drastically increased in J/F.

I am afraid that this will only confirm CX in their intentions.

BA's new earn rate seems to be horrible for BA SL (OWS) and below, and burn rate has worsen across the board.

Yet, I do think if MPC goes towards this way, it might make a bit more sense?

125% for J is ridiculous, BA has just enhanced its top cabin mileage bonus to 300% (I assume 200% for J and 300% for F).

If I am a Y flying MPC SL/GO I would be looking for elite benefits not miles. (CX's earn / burn rate is a joke from the beginning anyway!)

A few miles *2 or *3 are still only "a few".

Well technically the lowest priced fares on CX already only earn 25% mileage. Perhaps they'll drop LV fares to 50%, MK fares to 75% and leave only H and higher fares at 100%. Then give Y fares 110% mileage they usually cost as much as PY if not more. CA changed their accrual last year to this. They also upped the F and J fare earns.

If CX don't cock up this revamp they could steal a lot of East bound BA customers. Almost no-one has benefited from BA's revamp and a good number will be quite heavily penalised.

I was very concerned due to my Avios bank (also manufactured with HK card spending), it appears with the way I use it (Y or J at Zone 3 or below) my burn rates are unaffected <-- thank goodness.

However considering the status changes as well, isn't BA also excluding the same bunch that CX will exclude under MPC Titanium, namely economy pax and OWRs?

Guy Betsy Jan 28, 2015 9:08 am

CX should award people who fly CX and bank with AM / MPC. Make award bookings more restricted (like SQ) on partners' points.

Question - would there be howls of outrage from AAdvantage partners? I think most of CX's F award seats go to AAdvantage.

SQ's KF restricted this and the howls of outrage from other *A partners didn't go as loud as originally thought... so wonder what if CX went this way too?

Mafai Jan 28, 2015 9:11 am

But BA low fares earn tier/status too (10 tier points), while CX's O, S, N fares etc earns only partial asiamiles and zero towards status. BA Bronze (CX Silver equiv) 300 Tiers or 25 Eligible flights on BA vs 20 V class and above flights for CX. So min miles earn for BA Avios down from 500 to 125 too. So effectively, a lot less avios points for flyers in lowest fare economy (BA Coded N V K M L O Q S) for BA then but can still attain status.

Mafai Jan 28, 2015 9:14 am

Yes, I think outrage from AA! CX should award people who bank with them, but guess salvage whatever they can with those empty seats not sold.

If they introduce tier points, phase out stepped tiers, reduce non-mileage accruing classes, cancel three-year expiring miles, maybe I would. ;)

One can only hope...

I really don't see this happening.

Don't forget BA SL(OWS) and GO(OWE) gets 50% and 100% tier bonus. (originally 100% for BA SL as well)

That means as a BA GO, even if Y earns 50% s/he will get the 100%, not to mentioned J/F cabin bonus is likely to be 200% and 300% now.

J/F/GO paxs aren't that worse off, if these people are angry is it mainly because their Avois points just got "Eased Quantitatively", like savings in a Cypriot bank account. BA Avois doesn't expire like CX Asiamile, so quite a lot of people including myself, are sitting on piles of Avois.

If CX is going to benefit from this, it would only be the K/M/L/V buying paxs (not the most profitable Y/B/H paxs.

Unfortunately what you've mentioned remains what reality is likely to strike on us.

And unfortunately too, BA/IB's change is going to make CX seriously think on what to "enhance" - to be released early 2016. :(

Lets hope that they start by giving bonus miles to elite members ! MPC is literally the only programme that does not award bonus loyalty miles to its members for flying on its own airlines.. eg CX/KA.

CX is famous of targeting other OW carriers' elites. I actually think this is BA/AA/JL's response of that. (Couldn't blame CX though, you just can't compare BA+AA's service with CX, I not surprise at all when BA/AA's elite tried CX once and fall in love with CX, then moved most their Asian flight to CX's coffers.)

If you are a BA GO + J/F and don't fly BA/AA/JL, you can kiss goodbye to your 200~300% cabin bonus and 100% tier bonus.

It will make BA Elites think twice before booking a CX ticket.

JL does exactly the same thing, thus I am sticking with JL. This JV thing is like a small alliance in OW.

http://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/...-avios/flights
Tier bonus is available to BAEC Elites while flying BA/AA/JL.

CX probably need to think how to safeguard its own elites now, this PPS movement might be CX's response to this small circle of OW.

Just a wild thought, could CX actually allow not only double dipping, but even give out bonus miles to other OW elites flying J/F while the FFP is attached to other OW Carrier.

Say a BA GO who fly in CX F, would get all the usual TPs and Avois from BA, but in addition to that s/he would also get a separate "premium" miles to their own PPS style MPC account. MPC elites simply get tier bonus on J/F flight.

Cathay Boy Jan 28, 2015 2:15 pm

I would agree CX really is stingy towards the top premium fliers in some benefits. 150% miles for F and 125% for J? While other airlines are giving them out at 300% and 200%? Surly CX can "enhance" this aspect of their MPO.

I think CX is already stingy in giving miles away for Y fliers. V fares are not cheap in the Y segment of the market.
